Homemade Healthy Dog Treat Recipes for Picky Eaters

None of my dogs have been in the picky-eater-club, but it’s a common complaint in our Coton de Tulear community. So, if you have a fussy eater, try using stronger, flavorful ingredients to entice them. Here are some recipes that will be hard for your dog to resist.

#1 - Chicken and Cheddar Dog Biscuits:

Ingredients:

  • 1 cup cooked chicken, finely shredded
  • 1 cup whole wheat flour (or oat flour for a gluten-free option)
  • 1/2 cup shredded cheddar cheese

Instructions:

Mix the chicken, flour, and cheddar cheese together to form a dough. Roll out the dough, cut into small squares or fun shapes. Bake at 350°F (175°C) for about 15-20 minutes. Cool and serve.

#2 - Apple and Cinnamon Dog Cookies:

Ingredients:

  • 1 cup unsweetened applesauce
  • 2 cups oat flour
  • 1/2 teaspoon ground cinnamon

Instructions:

Combine the applesauce, oat flour, and ground cinnamon to form a dough. Roll out the dough, cut into shapes, and bake at 350°F (175°C) for approximately 15-20 minutes.

#3 - Tuna and Sweet Potato Bites:

Ingredients:

  • 1 cup canned tuna in water, drained
  • 1 cup mashed sweet potato
  • 1 egg

Instructions:

Mix the tuna, mashed sweet potato, and egg together. Roll into small balls or shape them as you like and bake at 350°F (175°C) for around 15-20 minutes. Tuna is usually a hit with dogs, and sweet potato adds a touch of sweetness.

#4 - Carrot and Cheese Twists:

Ingredients:

  • 1 cup grated carrots
  • 1/2 cup grated Parmesan cheese (substitute nutritional yeast if your dog doesn’t eat dairy)
  • 1/2 cup whole wheat flour (or oat flour)

Instructions:

Mix the grated carrots, grated Parmesan cheese, and flour together. Roll the dough into thin strips, then twist them into a spiral shape. Bake at 350°F (175°C) for around 15 minutes. The cheesy aroma is sure to entice your picky eater. Parmesan cheese has a high salty quantity, so limit how much you give your dog at once.

Homemade Healthy Dog Treat Recipes for Dogs with Allergies

Unfortunately, I am all too familiar with dog allergies. My dog, Luc, had severe food and environmental allergies for years. Many dogs have food allergies and sensitivities, so to avoid stomach upset, it’s a good idea to use recipes that avoid common allergens like wheat, soy, and dairy.

If your dog can’t eat eggs, you can substitute the eggs in these recipes with ground flax seed or chia seed egg replacement (one Tbsp flax or chia seed + 3 Tbsp water). 1/4 cup unsweetened applesauce can also often replace one egg.

Take your dog’s unique food issues into account and substitute as needed.

Healthy Homemade Soft Dog Treat Recipes

I’ve been searching for creative ways to get my dog, Lucy, to swallow her medication. It’s hard to hide the taste of a giant pill in healthy treats because there’s no fat and sugar to mask the taste. Homemade Dog Treats with Peanut Butter

Most of the recipes in this post do not include peanut butter because of the high-fat content. Many brands of peanut butter also add too much sugar. And as most of you already know, xylitol in peanut butter can be deadly. So, use these recipes sparingly since a little bit can’t hurt most dogs.

SUGGESTIONS:

Popsicle treat holder with tray
  • Have fun experimenting with these homemade dog treat recipe ideas. Try substituting ingredients you know your dog loves, or swap out any foods that trigger allergies. You can add or replace the liquid in a recipe with vegetable, chicken, or beef broth to make it more appealing to picky dogs. Just watch the amount of salt.
  • You can store these homemade treats in an airtight container to stay fresh. I love this container because it’s functional and looks good too!
  • Treats should only be about 10% of your dog’s total calorie intake. Even though these dog treats are healthier than most store-bought treats, they may contain ingredients that should only be consumed in small quantities. So, plan accordingly.
  • Select organic ingredients when possible since they don’t include highly processed, chemical-filled preservatives and fillers.
  • You may have to add or decrease liquids in some of these recipes to get the right consistency.
  • If these dog treat recipe ideas seem daunting, don’t worry - fruit and vegetables are the easiest and healthiest dog treats. No cooking or baking necessary! Carrots, broccoli, bananas, strawberries, and green beans are easy and healthy! Frozen watermelon is great on a hot summer day. If your dog isn’t a fan of veggies, you can blend or puree and sneak them into one of the above recipes.
  • Want your dog’s treats to last longer? I admit it; sometimes, I need to keep Lucy busy to get stuff done! She loves Kongs, but I don’t like cleaning them. I love these Pupsicles. They’re a little pricier than Kongs, but I love how easy they are to clean. And the optional tray is perfect for most of the homemade treats above. Just form treat into a ball, drop it in the tray, and you’re good to go. Super Easy!
