first day home

She is traveling to me from NY to VA by plane and she is 12 weeks old. What's the most important thing to do when she enters my home for the first time?

Surf's 1st weeks NEW
by: Surf's Mom

Surf too came to me at 12 weeks. Texas to Ca, big plane little crate. I left him in his crate during our ride home from the airport since this is what he now recognized as a safe place.
When we got home, I offered him water and immediately started the cycle of taking him out every two hours around the clock until he was potty trained. Surf was trained with a crate which I believe he found some comfort in. Coincidentiatly I had just become a new grandmother, all the babies used toys were lovingly transferred to Surf.
We live on the beach, on his first day we took our walk on the sand, a new experience and one he enjoys to this date.
When my puppy was tired or sleepy he went to his cart, to this day, he enjoys sleeping or resting by my feet, no longer use a cart for him. I have never kissed Surf, but this dog knows he is loved. I demonstrate my love by letting him know he has a master that will not let him get away with bad behavior and that his first week was a reflection of how our lives would be for the years we are beach bums together.

Contratulations NEW

Congratulations on your new puppy. I remember those early days were a mix between excitement, fear, insanity, and lots of love.

The most important thing for those first few days and nights is to start the bonding. Just enjoy your new puppy and make sure she feels safe and secure.

Here are some articles that may help.

Good luck and remember - it's totally normal to be overwhelmed during the first week. We forget just how much energy puppies demand.

welcome NEW
by: Vicky & Jonah

I would c if she'd like a drink then walk w/her around the back yard so she is comfortable & not alone to c if she'd like to go potty. I then would sit beside her somewhere comfortable since she needs rest & love after I've seen if she was a little Hungry yet. Feed little at a time but ck. Every couple hrs if she's ready for a little more. I probably would of baked her a little chicken & had ready to eat a little. (-:)

I wouldn't start anything but love, food & potty for a couple days while she's rested up from her strenuously long trip. Let her veg & let her just get her sea legs as they say.

Most of all enjoy your new little girl remember this is her 1st time away from mom & the only home she has known
