Need help for Coton with unpredictable behavior

by Barb
(United States)

I have a Coton, Abby who is a little more than 3 years old. I love her more than any other dog I’ve had. Unfortunately her behavior is unpredictable. She is perfect in every respect, except she is overprotective and barks, and goes “bizerk” when she feels threatened by outsiders. She can sense when someone is not a dog lover. My vet feels she may have PTSD as I did not get her til she was 4 months old. I did buy her from what I thought was a breeder. Turns out he was a puppy mill. By the time I found out, I was already in love with her. She has bitten a couple of people when she went bizerk. The vet put her on “doggy Prozac” and she does. Not have too many bizerk episodes. I live in a condo so I now have to keep her in a doggie stroller when taking her in and out of our building. It works pretty well. Wondering if anyone else has had this problem. If it gets to a point where I cannot keep her, she may be put down, which I would hate to see as most of the time she is precious! Help!

Coton Behavior
by: Elizabeth

My Chewy is 4 yrs old and he barks his head off at other dogs...bigger dogs mostly. He is protective and very loyal, however, his behavior seems to be turning a 'little' more aggressive as of late. The neighbor girl (5 y/o) was petting him when suddenly he snapped at her. He didn't bite her but it scared me...hurt my heart to think he would bite anyone let alone a child. He always seems to love on everyone! He's done it another time when I wasn't looking and I think refused to believe it happened. But I'm not sure what brought on this behavior. I had always read these breeds were sweet and good with everyone. I still love him to pieces but I just keep him away from little ones. He still thinks he can take on those big talks when we go for our walks, but I have learned to deal with his crazy barking. Ugh!

Can you find some other dogs who can model good behavior for her? Even a doggy daycare with other pups?

Don't put her down! NEW
by: Luxor's Mom

If you can't keep your Coton Abby with unpredictable behaviour, then put her up for rehoming. Even on this site under the topic Learn About The Coton, you will find Coton Rescue link. Cotons are not really meant for city living. As I have written before, Cotons are not an easy, simple dog breed - they are very human-like. They have large personalities and expect unconditional love from their two-legged companions. Remember, Cotons need constant companionship - they don't do well left alone for long periods of time.
