My 10 month Coton is waking up earlier and earlier due to feeding change.

by Mindi

My Coton de tulear is 10 months old. Due to recent intestinal issues, our vet recommended we feed her twice a day instead of one time. We walk her at 10:15 pm for her last walk and she has been waking up earlier and earlier. We take her out when she barks and she does her business. Previously,, she was sleeping until 7-7:15; now she's getting up at 5:00 am. We put her her in her crate until 7:00, but she barks incessantly. This isn't working so; we have been putting her in our room in her bed and she is quiet and goes back to sleep, but that's only if we feed her.

The vet states we are giving her enough food (1/4 cup for each feeding). She is very tiny (7lbs).
Any suggestions.

Getting up early NEW
by: Lulu & Socrates

Socrates eats twice day, 5:30 am and 5:30 pm. In winter, he gets up little later, if sun is not up, he does not want get up. So winter feeding time is 6 or 7 am and 6 pm.
Socrates does not walk so late, and he goes out at 10pm the lates to potty for quick out and in. Then we go to bed, and he waits for his good night snack inside of his create. When he finishes his snack, he will lick some water out a bottle and goes to bed.

We think that your little one needs some adjust time. Also you can give your little one somethings to chew in the morning such as bully stick or Himalayan cheese chew.

Good luck.

waking early NEW
by: sherry candie cotton

Mine are 5 and 7 years old and I have always fed my small dogs twice daily. Have you tried giving last feeding later in the evening?
Can't remember if you mentioned times that you feed. Perhaps it would help carry over until later in the am. Just a thought.

Cotons are very clever and learn quickly so its really easy for them to slip into unwanted behavior if allowed. I have certainly allowed mine to do so. lol

They are wonderful little gems and good luck with yours, hopefully this early rising will come to an end soon.

Cotons NEW
by: Vicky & Jonah

Jonah is 8 & is still fed twice a day b/c it's good to split their food. What ur pup is doing is normal as w/kids their schedules will vary into adulthood. Just as they learn during life to adapt to ur schedule when it changes we adapt to theirs. It doesn't mean it will be like that forever but it is what it is. Sorry.
