Burping or gurgling through his mouth

by John
(Fort Worth TX)

Hi,

Our 2 1/2 year old male makes a strange noise through his mouth on a regular basis. It's "sorta of" a burp or gurgle sound but not really a burp or gurgle. There are about 4 or 5 different noises. Some loud, some soft, some long, some short. It's not a stomach hunger gurgle coming from his stomach. It's not related to when he eats or the time of day or night.
He has done this since he was a puppy.
We are worried that it could be something serious that could be damaging his esophagus. Acid reflux? Barrett's disease?
The Vet can't tell by X-ray or blood tests, so she's doing some other tests to try and narrow it down.
I remember on this site, someone said that this was known and not unusual to the Coton.
Has anyone else had this condition with their Coton? Or even heard of it?
Thanks,
John

The Sounds of Coton de Tulear NEW
by: Coton Mama

Dear Texas: Is the "gurgle" sound low, subdued and somewhat like cat's purr?
My Coton - 6 years old male - makes all sorts of funny sounds to get attention. The low catty "purr" is the funniest - as if he is trying ever so tactfully and unobtrusively to remind that it's his feeding or walking time.
I already responded to you before - last November or October.
My Coton sometimes sounds like an old man struggling for breath, and sometimes like a newborn baby cooing - just to get attention or perhaps make me laugh. Cotons are quite like humans - scheming and manipulating, albeit in a more charming way. Took me only 6 years to figure it out.

Hey Pat! Burping or gurgling through his mouth NEW
by: Anonymous

Thanks Pat!
Pat, ya know, thinking about it, Jordy has always eaten fast too. But it's not always soon after eating...but what you said makes sense.
I really hate to put him through all those no fun tests if we don't need to.
If Rhylie is 5 yrs. old with no problems, and he's making the same burp/gurgle sound, I'm probably over-reacting huh?
Can I bug you with one last question please?
Jordy's "burps" are different sounds every time, and sometimes short-sometimes longer, sometimes loud-some times soft....and they are just different noised--rarely the same sound.
Is that the way Rhylie's burps are?
Thanks for your time Pat, you are very helpful!
John

Coton burping
by: Pat

My Rhylie is 5 years old and weighs 8 pounds. I have had her since she was 2 months old and she weighed 2 pounds at that time. She has burped ever since she was little. It sounds just like a normal person's burp. I did mention it to the vet. I told her Rhylie burps just like she or I would, but she was not overly concerned. I have not been too concerned about it either. Rylie doesn't burp all the time, just occasionally. From what I read-burping is usually from swallowed air, though an excess amount of burping could be from other health problems. Rhylie does have a tendency to eat her treats fast because she always seems to worry some one will take them. Maybe during these times she is taking in an increased amount of air. I take her to the vet every 6 months for routine check-ups and other times if she would need it. She has no health problems, except for seasonal allergies. She takes an allergy pill every day and is fine. On further searching on the internet it said it is common for dogs to burp to let out excess air in their stomachs possibly due to gulping their food down. I hope your vet finds that this is what is going on with your Coton and that nothing major is happening.

Burping gurggling
by: John

Thanks Pat for responding!
How old is Rhylie now?
Did you ask your vet about it? What did they say?
Our Jordy also has very soft, almost diarrhea, BM every month or so and I thought it might be related.
I don't know. Maybe we are being helicopter parents.
LOL.
I'm just paranoid I guess because when he was about
1 1/2 he came very close to having to have surgery because he ate part of a toy. They said that he might die and we were very scared.
Anyway, If you could let me know how old Rhylie is and what the Vet said, I really would appreciate it.
Thanks very much!
John

Burping
by: Pat

Ever since my Rhylie was little she has burped. She does it every now and then just like a person would do. She's in perfect health. I always just thought it was a behavior that Coton's have.
