Why did Jake die so suddenly?

Haley is gone 6 years now but I still wonder what went wrong. He had a good walk at 10:30pm, bound up the stairs when we came home and seemed to be in his usual spunky spirit. Then around 2:15am I was in the kitchen when I saw Jake lying by the sliding glass door. There were clumps of poo all around him and beside him was a pile of vomit. He slowly walked over to lean on the side of the kitchen peninsula and did not look well. I picked him up to find his heart beating out of control and he was gasping for air. I knew he was very sick but didn't want to go to a vet where they would have done all kinds of invasive poking and prodding. I just couldn't put him through that as I had a good sense this was the end. I went upstairs at 2:30am, placed him in his crate where he quietly lay and looked at me with very sad eyes for the last time. My son took him out of his crate at 8am where he was already stiff and cold.

The vet never gave me an explanation for Jake's death, but it has been eating at me for years as to why my seemingly 11 year old boy died so suddenly.

My Snowball is almost 15 and has tremors. After reading this article, I just started tearing up a bit. I can't imagine life without my Snowball.
So sorry for your loss.

Condolences for the loss of your beloved Jake NEW
by: Susan

I am wondering if Jake ate something that was poisonous. It must be so hard to love a beloved companion so suddenly and unexpectedly. My Maggie is like a vacuum cleaner picking stuff off the floor and I feel like she must be watched like a hawk. It can be hard to keep up with her antics.

sudden death NEW

Sorry to hear about Jake, we have a Coton called Truffles who is 2 years old and such a character. My comments are about a Maltese we had, Poppy, who was to most intelligent girl in the whole world and we still miss so much. Same as Jake, she woke in the morning playing with our Truffles, had her breakfast full of her normal self. Then suddenly we noticed her just standing in our garden like a statue, brought her in and we called the vets. To cut a long story short, we got stuck in a traffic hold up on the motorway and she died in my arms on the way to the vets, and on her 10th birthday. Never got to the vets but we think she had a stroke. She is now at rest in our garden where we still talk to her most mornings. Who knows what really happens to our beloved friends!
