My dog Macy was laying down then started trying to get my attention and all of a sudden started shaking and breathing fast

Possible asthma? NEW

I agree you need to see the vet. That said, my Alex (4 yrs. old), sometimes heaves in & out and shakes like he's having a hard time breathing. We saw our vet and that's exactly what's happening...turns out he has a little bit of asthma. Not horrible but good to know. Good luck!
