We are getting our 8wk old coton in a couple of weeks. Any advice on special treatment for the first night after a long drive from the breeders?

Coton coming soon!
by: Anonymous

I’m very excited we have a chance at a Coton Puppy in the next few weeks. My question is - is there any upside/downside to getting a girl be a boy? I know girl puppies get their periods. Is that difficult to deal with? Also, does a good breeder housetrain before pick up? This would be our family’s first dog and I’m pretty nervous! Thanks all!

First night with puppy NEW
by: Tammy

We picked up our puppy from the airport. The breeder did a great job as he had all he needed in his crate-toy and blanket from home. His first night (and a month after) we had him in his crate actually on the bed with us. He didn’t fuss at all and really lives his crate. It is a small, wire-type kennel where he can see everything and he would lean his body close to me So I could touch him. Now he is at the foot of the bed in his kennel and never fussed. We have two other dogs though, so I think they comfort him just being around. If he was the only dog in the house I could see him being more afraid. I bought him a pillow with a heartbeat but didn’t even need it Good luck.

Settling pup NEW
by: Vicky

We have just got our Coton puppy and on the first and second night we put him in his crate and slept right next to it. Wolfie didn’t cry for his litter mates at all. We did the same with our miniature schnauzer. On the third night we went up to bed and he was fine and slept all night!

Don't forget water.
Your breeder will give you a care package which will include things with smells of his mom & siblings.
And you may as well bring a fake grass pee pad. Stopping will also give him a break. We also had a 4 hour drive home and he actually used the P-Pad when we said "go potty"! (good breeder!).
Also don't stop at rest areas for him. He doesn't have his shots yet.
He really bonded with my wife on this drive home.
Our Jordy is now 9 months old.
Enjoy him/her! It's like getting a new grandchild!

Advice for new puppy
by: Anonymous

Hi,
We had a 4.5 hour journey home with 8 week old puppy. We had her blanket from the breeder as well as her toys which were a comfort to her. However, the biggest comfort to our new puppy was listening to puppy or dog music. She just loved it on the journey home and we continued to play it to help her settle in to her new home. We still play it now and then. Ours is now 6 months.
Just give her lots of gentle cuddles and stroke her often. She will settle in beautifully I am sure. This breed is so loyal, loving and wonderful in every way. Enjoy
