Scabs

by Bev
(Bradenton, FL)

Ever since my Coton was neutered and microchipped in April he has continually gotten scabs on him. They just appear all of a sudden, mainly behind his ear, neck, nose and shoulder. The vet has prescribed antibiotics (he has been on them almost consistently since May (he is now 13 mths). He will be off them briefly and they return.

I only feed him LTD duck/sweet potato Merrick dog food, Nordic naturals omega 3 and bully sticks trying to get it under control. I asked the breeder if she has ever heard of this (it is not mange or mites, vet has scraped and looked under microscope and neither of them know what it is) and she said she had not. I really don't want to puppy cut his hair to help control it, unless I absolutely need to.

Each time I go to the vet it costs $150, and if I have to go twice a month it gets quite expensive. Have you ever heard of any other Cotons with this issue?

Update on my Puppy's Allergy - Seems to have cleared up NEW
by:

My puppy came from a reputable breeder and is gorgeous. The breeder did help out with the one vet bill (luckily we did buy health insurance when we purchased him). I would still buy another Coton from her.

We ended up taking him to a vet specializing in allergies in pets and had an allergy test done. Seems he is allergic to most everything. He recommended allergy shots but my dog wanted nothing to do with that. He has us bathing him in special allergy shampoo and is on 2 benedryl a day (kids) and so far for the past 7 months he has had no flare ups. We also have him on Merrick duck & sweet potato but I don't believe he has any food allergies.

I think, but could be wrong, that his immune system my not have been fully developed (he had the issue between 7 & 13 months of age). The last flare up at the age of 13 months went away on its own. Keeping our fingers crossed it is gone completely now - will know by the end of summer.

I never let him walk on grass - that was his biggest allergy. So that could be part of why he is fine now.

The breeder was very concerned about this issue and I kept in touch with her. I do keep my Coton in a long coat (comb/brush daily & weekly baths). If I ever wanted another Coton, I would buy one from her again.

Update on Scabs NEW
by: Anonymous

I guess the scabs were from scratching. Took him to the allergy dermotologist and had him tested. He is allergic to so many things and will be on shots for the rest of his life. I thought a breeder was not supposed to breed dogs with atopic dermatitis since it is herediary from what I read.
