Raw food diet vs. Dog food?

by Sara
(Ont)

I will be getting my puppy soon, and I'm not sure which is the best way to go for my coton de tulear. The breeder has recommened a brand of dog food, while others are telling me to go with the natural raw food way. Is anybody else feeding their dogs raw food?

Raw vs. dog food diet
by: Betty

Our breeder is a raw food proponent, but I couldn't get there so we started and stayed with California Natural, herring and sweet potato with some puppy chicken and rice added. Our coton likes it, his teeth stay clean (and they're very strong), and we add apples or pears when he wants! Good luck.

Raw Food Diet vs Dog Food
by: Suzan Mesquite NV

I give both my coton de tulear's Natural Balance small bites/ No Grain Limited Ingrident Diet dry dog food. There are various flavors to choose and you can choose dry/soft or raw.

The best part of choosing this dog food is your puppy can eat it throughout puppy hood & into adult hood. You don't have to buy food for puppies only and then change it to adult dog food later.

I found when I started giving my dogs this food their digestive system was better, their coat looked healthier and helped their allergies.

You can go online and pull up the Natural Balance website and check out all the food they have and which would be best for your dog.

You can find this food in pet stores. But pet stores don't carry all the choices the brand offers this why I say to go online to check out this is why I say go on the Natural Balance website.

I didn't beleive or realize a food can make difference & how it can help a dog if they eat a good dog food, until I changed the food for my dogs and I am now a beleiver when I saw the difference with both my dogs.
Hope this helps and good luck!

Natures Variety
by: Anonymous

I give my puppy Nature's Variety Prairie Puppy Kibble and mix in a drop of olive oil and a few pieces of shredded chicken breast and she loves it! She was underweight when we got her so the olive oil and chicken probably wont always be neccessary. The food is based on raw food diet with no corn or grains but without the mess and hassle of actual raw food. The puppy variety is especially for small breed puppies and dogs under 50 lbs at maturity, so perfect for the Coton! Enjoy your new puppy!

Charlee's new mom

Thank you for your help! I guess I'm just nervous about giving my puppy raw food, I'm afraid she will choke. When I get her (9 more days!!) should I slowly start her on the raw food by mixing it in her kibble her just stop giving her the kibble all together?

Could you explain a little more about the raw diet? What kinds of raw foods are you feeding your lulu?
Thanks.

Feeds prey model raw
by: Lulu's mom

We feed raw here based on the prey model raw diet. I have fed raw for nearly eleven years now off and on (when we had dogs as there was a brief hiatus) our two dogs, a 130lb Bernese mountain dog and our Coton, lulu are strictly raw fed. They have perfect health, teeth never need to be professional cleaned and their coats are lustrous and shiny. I find their compact highly degradable poops are a nice bonus. They are very active and healthy. It is certainly less expensive than the kibble I would choose if necessary. (grain, corn, veggie free) Orijen brand comes to mind as that is what my daughter feeds her pup. We travel with coton regularly and bring a small cooler of her food. Happy to answer questions based on our experience.
Enjoy
