Raw dog food diet for the coton de tulear?

by Ginger

I was wondering if anyone has their Coton de Tulear on a raw dog food diet? My Coton is 2 1/2 years old and has recently been diagnosed with food allergies. Some friends of ours have had success putting their bull dog on a raw food diet for his allergies and suggested we try it for our Coton.

It seems extreme to me and I wonder if a raw diet will provide all the nutrients necessary.

I'd really appreciate any feedback. Thanks

Started my cotton on Nature's Variety Instinct
by: Anonymous

Nature's Variety Instinct is a grain free dry dog food that I have been giving my Cotton for over a month she seems to be doing well. However I got a 2nd coton de tulear named Roxy who is a fussy eater and I have to hand feed her and then she'll eat. She's 3 yrs old and I've had her a week and a half now and I am hoping this is a temporary situation and she will eat on her on once she feels comfortable. Both my Cotton's seem to like this food

Next best thing to Raw diet
by: Sherri with Fenway & Riley

I used to feed my Cotons what I thought was the best kibble food on the market (I prefer to free feed and didn't want to give that up). Anyway, Fenway & Riley were constantly scratching and having allergic reactions. I spoke to lots of people and was worried about the controversy and mess of a raw diet. In speaking to lots of people I heard about "Honest Kitchen" - it is human grade food, even prepared in a plant that also prepares human foods - BUT - it isn't messy at all and best of all, I am still able to free feed. It is actually human grade food that is dehydrated. All you do is mix it with some water, let it sit for about 5 minutes and BAM! Great food! My dogs really love it, NO more itching and reactions (this was almost immediate). No food transition issues either. If you haven't tried this, I recommend looking into it. It changed my dogs lives (and mine as a result). I am sorry, I know I sound like a commercial, however, it really is that good.

I fount the best Dog Food for food allergies and Digestion
by: Suzan

It's Natural Variety Instinct Diet Turkey it's grain free and gluten free it has antioxidenst such as green tea & other natural ingridents. I wrote in about a month & a half ago my little cotton was constantly licking and biting her feet, paws, butt etc.. And also having problems with her stool, in the morning the stool is normal, but after that it was soft wasn't formed I did bring a sample of stool to have it test and everything was normal. I changed her dog food to Natural Variety Instinct Diet Turkey. She has been eating this for almost two months and there is a big difference now in her stool its normal and formed as it should never soft as before and she doesn't lick like she use to I couldn't get the difference a food could make, She does drink more water then she use to but that's not a problem this type of food dogs drink alot of water. This food has help my cotton so if anyone else out there has issues with food allergies or your dog has a problem digesting there food then I recommend this type of food. There is also Nutro Natural Choice grain free Natural turkey meal sweet potato formula (Limited Ingridient Diet). You can go online to order & find the speciality dog stores in your area to purchase the food if they don't have it they will order it for you. My little cotton is doing better and that's all I care about if she's happy then I'm happy. I always like to share great products I tried for my dog and when it works I let others know.

Coton Allergies
by: Cristine

Hi Ginger,

I have two cotons who are allergic to different foods. One is so allergic (itchy, diarhhea, ear infections) to EVERYTHING that, as a last resort, I put him on a rotating diet of raw llama, duck, and rabbit. His coat soon grew softer, his breath improved, and his other health problems have disappeared. I wish I'd tried raw food sooner.

My other coton is allergic to chicken and grains. I tried him on raw food and he kept throwing up. My holistic vet says he lacks the enzyme needed to digest raw food. I tried browning different kinds of meat for him, but he threw that up, too. I find he does best on Natural Balance lamb and brown rice or duck and sweet potato kibble. If I try food with grains or too many ingredients, his breath gets terrible, he gets itchy, and he gets diarhhea.

I hope this is helpful. I'm glad you're open to searching for the best solution for your beloved Coton. Best of luck!

Thanks for your input
by: Ginger

Thank you everyone. It's always good to hear from folks who actually have first hand knowledge instead of just relying on sales people who have a vested interest. Sounds like I've got nothing to lose and everything to gain by experimenting with the right raw dog foods. It's good to have options. Thanks again! I hope I can report back with positive results....

I also have our boys on raw Natures Variety - but I also cook it - in a frying pan on low frozen until it unthaws and lightly brown. I also have them on Blue Instinct small bites for dry.

Try Stella and Chewy's
by: Debra

The food I named in the title is freeze-dried raw patties. It can be eaten dry, wet or mixed. Since Heathcliff, my Coton, has been on it, he eats well.

I also hear good things about Grandma Lucy's.

Diet for Allergies
by: Ellie

Oliver, my 4 year old Coton suffered with stomach upsets and ear infections and was always treated for the symptoms and not the causes. We had him on several different diets, including Prescription Diet. All, however, contained grains. Finally, at wits end, I took matters into my own hands and went to a natural pet food store. I determined that he was allergic to grains. I switched him to Honest Kitchen dehydrated food and specially packaged raw chicken. Even though it is meant to be served raw, I cook it in the microwave oven for a few minutes.
He has not had a sick day (I say with crossed fingers)or an ear infection since. I sometimes add egg or cheese for variety, but never grains.
I hope this helps. They are too precious to suffer from anything that can be prevented. Good Luck
