Question about matting for 7 month old Coton de Tulear

by Larry Chown

Hi! I have a 7 month old Coton and have been seeing more and more lumpy sort of (I am guessing) matted hair under his longer hair. I am assuming this is his adult hair coming out though. I am not sure however, and am trying to decide whether I should be dematting these soft lumpy hair or leave it....I am using a Safari dematting tool now but it doesn't work that well for deep lumpy hair like this and if I dig into it...it is hard to break up and the puppy is getting hurt.

Question is do I leave this stuff alone for now or do I demat and get a better demat tool...?...and any suggestion on the best demat tool for this...I was looking at Maxpower Planet Pet Grooming Brush double sided shedding and dematting undercoat rake.

I was going to also ask my breeder what she used....I know the one she had was around $100.00 which seemed pretty expensive though. Also have you used Aragan oil for detangling? Just looking for a cheaper but good option for a detangling spray.

Lastly, I was looking at the Chris Christensen pin brush you mentioned and there are three to choose from..is the 27 mm or the 35 mm pins the best option for this kind of coat...I was assuming 27 mm would do.

Hi. When my Coton was developing his adult coat, I did not use a dematting tool. I used the Chris Christensen 20 mm oval wood pin brush, along with C Christensen Ice on Ice detangler spray. My boy is 4 now and I still use this brush and spray. These products work very well on puppy and adult dog coats - I don’t think you’ll be disappointed.
Good luck!
