Our Coton de Tulear is losing her hair

by Dennis

Our 10 year old female Coton de Tulear has started to lose her hair. The hair, on her body, including her tail, is thinning.

We have not changed groomers and they don't know why Kiwi's coat has changed. Due to constipation issues last winter, we went from all dry food to half dry, half canned to increase moisture intake. Both are high quality foods from Blue.

Lastly, she became fearful of the fireworks this 4th of July so we thought the nervousness may have caused the hair loss. I hope you can help.

4 yr old Coton is loosing his hair NEW
by: Anonymous

Our Coton of 4 years is loosing his hair, he has had 2 doses of BraVecto, I'm not giving him anymore. We have had blood work done and it all comes back fine. I have put him on a half of a tablet of metatoin to see if this help, he has been on it now for almost 2 months and we do see some hair growth returning. No more BraVecto for our Riley.

My Hair is loosing her hair too
by: Cotonmommy

I also have a 12 year old Coton de Tulear, female, she started to lose her hair too. Went to the vet and he suggested melatonin 3mg a day. Her thyroid is a bit off, but not enough to justify medicating. So we are trying the melatonin too. Will let you know, it could take a month or so to show.

Solution to hair loss
by: Cotonmommy

Hi,
My Golden retriever had Alopecia (hair loss) a few years ago. All the tests showed that there was nothing wrong with tyroid and everything was fine.

He recommended I try so melatonin, to our amazement, the hair has grown back, and it never happened again. I also recommended the melatonin pills to a friend with a dog that had lost all his hair, it is growing back.

You can research melatonin on the web, it explains it well, mention it to your vet, sometimes it is a lack of zinc as well, but it certainly possible to help the poor puppy.

Hair loss
by: Lauren

My dog Geoff has started to loose his hair, it started about Christmas time. His skin and roots of his hair turned a pinky beige colour first then it started to fall out. He's been back and forth to the vets, had all sorts of tests but everything has come back clear, which I'm relieved about because I was thinking the worst! They originally thought it was his thyroid but nope, my vets are now basically at a loss and say he's a bit of an enigma! He used to have such a lovely fluffy tail but now only has a little fur left on it. I don't no what else I can try? He's only 6 but he looks twice that? Can anyone give me any advice? Many thanks x

Coton de Tulear Hair Loss
by: Gale

I'm wondering if Kiwi has been to the Vet to determine the cause of the hair loss. It's hard to know how to treat the problem when you don't know the cause. Treatment might vary depending on whether she has a health issue such as thyroid problems, Cushings disease, food, flea or environmental allergies, infections, mange, alopecia, etc.

And yes, anxiety can certainly cause hair loss as well.

Some suggestions:

  • Definitely see a Vet if you haven't already

  • Learn more about dog skin problems here; to learn about treating various types of allergies. The most common treatments include antihistamines, weekly baths with gentle soothing ingredients, anti-inflammatory topical ointments, tranquilizers that help reduce itching and antibiotics and cortisone for extreme cases. Definitely work with your Vet to determine best treatment.

  • If your dog isn't already on flea prevention that's always an easy fix. Fleas are a large factor in skin and coat problems and can easily be solved by using flea prevention treatments like Advantage or Frontline.

  • Have you tried any herbal remedies? I've tried a few with mixed results. I've just ordered Skin-eze for my dog who suffers with itching due to allergies. There are claims that this product has helped dogs with hair loss. I haven't tried it yet but will definitely report back with the results. I am always looking for long term solutions that are safe for Luc.
