My Coton is very shy

by Heather
(Northwood, OH)

I have a 4 yr old Coton. I got him when he was 9 weeks old. He has always been very shy and timid. Unfortunately it's just my husband and I as his family. He isn't a fan of kids. He has been through obedience training. Plus other classes. We are members of a dog park, where he has some dogs he likes to hang out with, but does not rough house or play with other dogs. He wants to initiate playing with some dogs, but he uses his human communication for playing. (Sitting pretty and waving his arms up and down). He's very socially awkward.

My questions are, is it to late to try to socialize him and get him to play with other dogs?
Is it too late to correct his timidity and shyness?

Socialization NEW
by: WRM

I don't think its ever too late to train or socialize your Coton. We got ours from a breeder who was planning to show her, but she was so timid in the ring, they decided to let her go to us instead of trying to force her to be a show dog.

So, I have been working with her ever since and she is very well socialized now due to taking her anywhere I can (such as Home Depot or just walking in public places) as well as advanced obedience training (group classes).

Never too late NEW
by: Gale

I can relate to your question. Luc is the king of the house when it's just us at home, but out in the world he used to hide behind my legs. Despite the fact that Luc has a natural shy temperament, his confidence has grown tremendously over the years by getting him exposed to other people and dogs as much as possible.

We just moved into a new home recently and I was so proud to see him playing at the park with the other dogs without having to watch my every move.

So, it's never too late to socialize. It just takes consistency and patience. Good Luck and let us know how it goes!
