My 12 week old Coton wants me to chase him all the time.

How do I break him of that? He's starting to understand "no", but he chooses not to listen....! I know he's still very young, but how do I put him on the right path of good behavior?

Coton plays chase NEW
by: Vicky & Jonah

A game all my dogs in my lifetime loved to play. Jonah still at time will grab my stocks & wait for me to see him so we can play.

Here is a fun one to play which teaches him to come. Buy a bag of plastic whistles from a party city & put one in every room with a bag of cheerios or dog food as treats.

Now charge up the whistle by blowing it (does not have to b loud or long) w/pup in front of u & blow /treat about 10 to 20 times. This is also how u charge up a clicker for clicker training.

Now go to another room & blow the whistle & when the pup comes treat. Never blow & not treat. Play this game all through ur home once confident then play outside also.

U now have accomplished 2 things. He is learning that when u blow he must come even if he is running down the street for some reason & it is a good game for exercise. U can even mention the word "come" when he runs to u after u blow to throw in that xtra command.

Next game is hide in a closet & blow & when he finds u throw in the word "find me." Soon play the "find me" game without the whistle & just yell "find me." Go outside & play around the yard once confident. Now when he has been quiet for awhile & u r wondering what he made b into yell "find me." Remember always a treat when he finds u.

This will start the chase after u which teaches & is fun all in one. I do think a little game of I will get u & when I catch u, u will get a big kiss & hug never hurt any dog every once & awhile. Just a thought.

By the way he is ADORABLE. Congrats on ur new Coton Puppy. Looking forward to many pictures.

You Run in opposite direction NEW
by: Phyllis

He's baby, but prime time for socialization and training classes. You might start with a basic training book, but the classes are terrific.
I learned that he should never run from you...play the game so he can run, but HE has to chase YOU. Then lots of happy fuss and a treat for coming to you. Being with you must always better than anything he is doing.
All good wishes - they are so smart, and yours is precious!

Playing chase
by: Iris Miller

Tuffy also loves to play chase and also fetch and catch me, tug of war and chase. He loves to run around in circles and switches his turns on a dime. Tuffy is 5 1/2 years old and still plays like a puppy. Most improtant is take your puppy to early puppy training and socialization.I took Tuffy to Petsmart, it was not expensive and very important. Teach your dog the basic commands, sit, down-stay and come. I also had a trainer teach me to walk him on a short leash and follow, not lead me. Tuffy is stubborn and demanding and extremely particular about his treats and food, also very treat oriented, though he gets a lot of high pitched praise too. I have a very effective ceramic whistle that I sometimes use if he is so distracted he can't hear me call "come". That is the rare occasion he is off leash in our back yard and tears off running towards the neighbors fenced in dog. I blow the whistle and he comes running right to me. He also has separation anxiety,(we both do) so he needs to know where I am at all times. When I blow the whistle and he's running to me I turn my back to go into the house and he's right there with me. Try turning his play time and chasing into a learning experience.Good luck with your puppy, he's adorable! Enjoy it!

puppy chasing
by: sherry cotton candie

Your little puppy is just so cute, he is still very young so I would not expect to much as far as him listening to all your demands just yet.

I guess I have been doing a bad thing as far as playing chase. We got Cotton at 5 months and she has always liked to play chase. At least two times a day she will start running around the furniture and the chase is on, sometimes we change directions and she is chasing me. -- She loves it and tires out very easily (thank goodness).

We cannot ever let her unattended off the leash as she does run and run and loves it. In a fenced in area is fine but too many scary things around here in fl. I never thought about playing chase would encourage her to run outside as well. It is more like I am free and lets take off. She always has come back after a few minutes but we no longer give her the chance to run free.

She is almost three and like your puppy understands commands but at times just does not listen. We just have to keep a close eye on her at all times but her rescued sister will follow us to the car and stand to be lifted in. She has never ventured away from us so maybe its more of a personality trait.

Good luck with him, he is adorable.

Mine, too
by: Barbara

Mine likes to be chased, too. Not by me, but when we go to the dog park, rather than chase the other dogs, she does everything she can to get them to chase her. It's funny to see. So maybe your dog would like to go to the dog park and find a friend, or maybe getting him a companion would help. Maybe he's too young for the dog park, come to think of it. Your puppy sounds like a very dear, sweet dog.

My Coton love to run too
by: Sue

My Coton also loves to run. I let her out in my fenced back yard and sometimes she will just run for a solid 5 minutes non-stop. I think it's just in their nature. I would suggest if you have a fenced in back yard to take a ball outside and teach him or her how to fetch. Best thing that I ever did was get my Coton a playmate. :) We just bought a Cheweenie and they have a great time entertaining each other. Cotons are great dogs but they do have a lot of energy, especially a pup. Hang in there and keep trying to find ways for him or her to exert some of that energy without depleting you of yours. And wow I agree - what a cutie.

You're the boss, right?
by: Rachel

First, I agree that it seems like a potential dangerous game to play. Replace this game with something else that your puppy will like. How about fetch, at least that way you're in charge.

Second - OMG, that's the cutest puppy I've ever seen!!!!

don't chase
by: Anonymous

You should never chase a puppy. It will cause problems if you are outside and suddenly the dog wants you to chase him and he will continue to run away from you-that will be a potential disaster. If anything, you should train him to chase you. A good game to play is called "puppy ping pong." You are on one end of the room and someone else is another. You take turns calling your dogs name and when he comes to you, you give him a treat. Then the next person calls his name.
