The American Kennel Club (AKC) have done an article on this.l called "Leaving their calling card - the issue of marking". Simply telling the dog ‘no’ is not going to work.

My nine year old still does it and had done it since he would hike. He is a alpha male. I don't know if there is a way to break him or not. I just make sure he wears a belly band when we visit. He is worse of there are other dogs in the house and there usually are. Good luck!
