terriers NEW
by: Vicky & Jonah

Most Cotons r not as athetic as terriers even thou they have terrier in them. They r good in agility. I guess u will have to look at how ad vet of an athlete u r? Cotons r not as hyper or destructive as a terrier can be in the early yrs. Much easier to train & they listen 100 times better off leash.

Coton's grooming and walking NEW
by: Anonymous

We have a Coton (Pixie) and a mix breed (Scruffy).
Pixie loves to play with Scruffy as much as possible. I think she only goes on our walks because Scruffy wouldn't be with her if she didn't go. Pixie does not like the Missouri heat so doesn't spend too much time outdoors.

As far as grooming goes, I try to do the trimming on my pups myself. Both are long haired. I can use the shaver on Scruffy and get a nice looking trim. I cannot do this on Pixie. Her fur (hair) just doesn't behave the same way. Her hair mats very easily and I'm sure she should be getting baths a lot more frequently than she is to keep the mats away.

mini-schnauzer NEW
by: sherry cotton candie

I have found their hair grows really quick. I love the long hair look of the coton which is why I wanted one, we keep Cotton's long and yes it does take daily brushing and sometimes I still cut out a mat. She gets to hyper at the groomers so I trim her face and feet myself. I measured her hair a few days ago and it is almost 8 inches in most places. I do trim it occ. so it does not drag the ground.

Candie's hair is curly and mats very easy plus she does not like being brushed so we take her to the groomers for a puppy cut about every three-four months.

Depending on their life style and what you like would be the main factor as to the length of their hair. As for walks and jogging mine are not able to go very far. The heat just gets to them. Their hair seems to attract dirt and grass like a magnet so depending where we take them they get bathed every two or three weeks. In cool weather we will walk 3-4 miles but they take turns riding in their stroller. They never walk the whole way and sometimes tire out even then.

I love taking them places just to give them a change of scenery but neither of mine are very athletic. Play time is only maybe 5 minutes and they are content to lay quiet for awhile. Are you looking for a more energized dog? Maybe other cotons are different but just wanted to answer from my experience. They are precious, loving little dogs, and seem so human at times.
I just adore mine.

Haircut and Hiking NEW
by: Anne

I think grooming a Coton is important - I prefer to keep our Coton's coat shorter because her hair can mat. I try to brush her daily to keep out the mats and clean out the debris (grass, leaves, etc.). We have her bathed and groomed professionally every 3 months. Sometimes we give her baths in between because she loves tramping through the black mulch especially after it rains. So her little paws and legs become black. Also her face does too if she decides to dig a bit. If you don't mind a daily brushing and detmatting when necessary, then keep the coat long.

Our dog does not like walking or hiking in the heat. Sometimes she will just sit down and won't move. Otherwise, I've taken her on 3 mile walks. She loves her walks.
