Hip displasia

by Joan

My 7 month old puppy has a hip problem due to hip displasia or trauma or legg-calve perthes. Anyone have similar issues?

Sadie - now 5 months since surgery NEW
by: Joan

I thought I would follow up on Sadie's progress since her FHO surgery November 16, 2016. She is now a year old or 13 months and is moving about way better than we thought she would be. She walks on all four, sometimes when she runs she pulls up the leg that had FHO surgery, but she is a happy little girl. If you would see her walking you would not know that she even had this surgery. All her hair has grown back with no visible scars.

So, I would say surgery was a success and her pain has been eliminated which was our main focus. We were very lucky and I would highly recommend UW Veterinary Hospital, Madison, Wisconsin.

Thanks for listening.

Hip /femoral surgery NEW
by: Joan

After we had 2 opinions on our little Sadie and radiographs a month apart, her femoral head deteriorated even more. Our only option was an FHO which was completed this week on November 15, 2016. We brought her home yesterday. She needs lots of rest, physical theraphy, massage. We return to UW VETENARIAN Hospital in Madison in two weeks for suture removal and to see the physical therapist. She is in a lot of pain, has a patch and an anti inflammatory med. we are hopeful for a full recovery and no more pain.

hip displasia NEW
by: bw

Be sure your Vet has confirmed this!! My 6 1/2 yr old coton was skipping and walking on 3 legs. My vet found nothing wrong, x-rays were negative, even tho he has a shallow patella, it was not an issue. Could not find anything wrong. So I took away his ability to jump up onto stools to peer out window and get all excited jumping on and off when something went by window.

I gave him a good glucostomine/chondroitin with msm and tumeric pill. In just a few weeks he is just fine!!! He does stand up to look out the window which makes him strengthen his back leg. I am so happy I did this for him. All is well. I wish your puppy the same good results!!

What type of surgery NEW
by: Joan

I have been reading all your comments on hip displasia and when mentioning surgery, what type ? Removal of femoral head FHO or total hip replacement THR? Or any other surgery? Appreciated all your comments...Thank you
Of course we are hoping there are other options are available.

Leggs calve perthes NEW
by: Vicky & Jonah

I just noticed Carole's post. Using surgery is only suggested when you have noticed that their walk is effective or a limp. It is an excessive build up of calcium around the femur (I think it is) w/o looking it up. It is noticeable in their walk or run.

Leggs calve perthes NEW
by: Vicky & Jonah

I had a Silky who had to be operated on it @ 6 months. They will hve to be careful the rest of tHe r lives even though I know the operation is more advanced now. After done they will need to remain quiet (no jumping, running etc). U will have to carry them to & from the bathroom for awhile after.

Get them use to a crate if they aren't & I would suggest let them continue bathroom on a pad if so trained it will make life easier in long run.

At time not much was known but 3 yrs later Dog World sent me all they had on it b/c even thou my vet gave me all she had @ time I had contacted magazine for more.

To be clear on what the facts are it is hereditary & so is hip dysplasia even if your breeder denys.

Donavan was my million dollar dog. Not really a million but I'm sure u understd. Honestly once surgery is done, I would suggest u plan on taking ur 1 or 2 wk vaca if u can or c if someone can stay & babysit while ur at work. It will definitely in the long run make the healing process more effective.

I don't want to scare u but it is long, long haul till they if this is the diagnosis. Good luck my thoughts r with u.

Hip Displasia NEW
by: SHErry candie cotton

No I have never had a problem but from reading other posts at different times I wonder if this could be a genetic problem? Have you notified the breeder to see if she is aware of any issues with others in your litter or past litters?

Hope your baby does well and does not require any type surgery for it. Good Luck!

Hips NEW
by: Carole

My larger dog stepped on Bentley''s, my Coton''s foot a few years ago. I had the foot x-rayed and it also showed his hips. He has displasia. It does not bother him. The vet says it may never bother him. He is 5 now.
