Healthy dog chews?

by Laurie
(New York)

Am trying to find a healthy safe, low calorie chew for my 4 month old Coton, Daisy. There seems to be mixed opinions as to rawhide at this age, and although she liked Healthy Edible Nylabones for puppies for a while, shes lost interest. Any thoughts appreciated---

She does like stuffed kongs, but really only for crate-times.

Baby Carrots are the best treats
by: Lana

Hello Laurie,
I absolutely agree that baby-carrots are the best crunchy teats for Cotons. My Cotons never said "No!" to a fresh carrot. They also love apples, but you have to be careful with apples. Not every Coton has a strong stomach.
I would stay away from Rawhide Treats, Rawhide bones...
Try Innova Health Bar Dog Treat, always available on Amazon.com, no stomach problems, crunchy, delicious, savory treat packed with high-quality protein. Have to be fresh.
Sam's Yams Veggie "Rawhide" is excellent for dental health, and a chewability that dogs love,100% sweet potato.
I just got a new Dog Food ALERT - posted by
Madagascar Coton de Tulear Club of America.
"PURINA BENEFUL DOG FOOD SAID TO BE KILLING DOGS.

We have to watch out what our dogs are eating every day, it's not a joke anymore.
Good luck.

Healthy Treats
by: Shelly

I but 100% turkey hotdogs and use them as treats. Cut them in bite size pieces and lay on flat microwaveable cooking sheet with sides not touching. Microwave for 3 minutes or until the moisture is out of them. Cool and keep refrigerated. My Coton loves them!

bully sticks are wonderful
by: Anonymous

i also use bully sticks with my coton - we use the ones sold at petsmart that are for dogs < 20 lbs and they come in a pack of 5 or 3 if they're braided. They don't smell bad unlike other bully sticks. She's addicted to them, and we call it her 'crack' stick.

however, i will have to say, she goes through them now in a few hours that she has her adult teeth. So I am looking at hooves and antlers which I hear are longer-lasting but more expensive.

Check the ingredients
by: Gale

Just be careful to read the ingredients of any product you buy and check the fine print and make sure it's not manufactured in China. There have been numerous recalls lately. As much as I like that some chews are good for your dog's teeth, I only give homemade treats these days to ensure safety.

Try carrots - they're healthy, cheap, and most dogs seem to love them. I'm also lucky to live near a a great dog bakery that specializes in organic treats - made daily without any preservatives or chemicals. Luc gets some of these special treats once in a while, but he still prefers his carrots.

dog chews
by: Iris Miller

always observe your dog when they are chewing those treats, whatever you give them. they can chew pieces of, so pick it up and throw away before the dog swallows it whole. It can be detrimental to the digestive tract,
PS bully sticks atre bull penis tendons the stink is urine, gross, I know.My dog loves them, and always brings it to me to hold for him while he chews on it. I stopped buying them. Besides being vey expensive, they really disgust me. There are other chews that are good for them .

bully sticks
by: roxanne

We also give our cotons bully sticks, but only ones made in the usa. We order ours online from value pet supplies.excellent for tartar control. We only let them chew about half a stick per day, always under supervision. Also, once the stick get to about three inches in length, we take it away.

Dog Chews
by: Vicky & Jonah (Az)

I just use the Dingo Brand tiny dog rawhide bones I pick up at Walmart they r about 1 1/2" long pkg of 7. Jonah likes the white ones. He will carry it around with him for up to 3 days until I guess he decides to chew it.

I liked the nylabone chew ones but he lost interest. I do give him the tiny denta sticks but I do brush his teeth also. Jonah thou is not a big chewer never has been.

My female Silky chewed up a kong once I bought a little bigger one but her toys went every where with her also. I would wake up & she would be staring at me w/a toy ready to play. I think its normal as w/people dogs r different also.

I have a big white pull thing thick made w/string that is suppose to be ok for them to chew Jonah plays w/it but as I said he doesn't chew much.

Safe for puppies?
by: laurie

there seems to be some disagreement among the pet stores I visited today as to what age is appropriate for bully sticks. While they seem like the perfect solution, ARE bully sticks OK for a 4 months old? Thannks

Bully Sticks
by: Eric Trout

Dixie-Sugar loves Bully Sticks. We have been giving them to her since she was 5 months old. The vet said they are good for her and better than rawhide. The only issue is that they do not last for her. Depending on how thick they are they can last an hour to several days. We limit her to one a day.

Chew toys
by: Trudy's mama

I buy the dental sticks. My vet said those were safe and eatable. My only problem is that trudy LOVES LOVES LOVES toys. She eats next to her toys, she plays with every single one of them every day and sleep with her toys. However I have yet found one that lasted more than a week or two. Nylabones last her maybe a month. Any of you have this problem with your Coton? or is this totally normal? I would like help as well to find nice chew toys that would LAST. She destroyed her kong toy in no time. She s a good girl though..never chew on other stuff. Need things to keep her very busy.
Thanks

Bully sticks
by: Emily

My Coton Casper loves bully sticks. I make sure to only buy the odorless ones, because the non-oderless can be very stinky. One stick will last him about 3or 4 days. Try them :)
