Smiling Zoey

Here is an updated picture of our darling Zoey. She is almost 6 months and simply amazing!! She quickly learned to ring the bell to go out, loves to go for walks and while we use a leash, she just trots along beside me. I think she is beginning to change from her puppy hair as there is a lot of it in the brush now when I groom - little worried about that! She is such a wonderful, sweet puppy and loves everyone.

Ring a Bell to Come Out/Inside
by: Vicky & Jonah (Az)

1) Wiggle a bell on floor & encourage ur dog to "get it" Mark the instant he touches the bell w/nose or paw by saying "good bell" & offering a treat.

2)Hang the bell from a doorknob @ a low height & encourage ur dog to ring by saying "bell, get it". U may need to hold a treat behind the bell, & tease him w/it. As soon as the bell makes a sound, praise & reward.

3)Get ur dogs leash & get him excited to go for a walk. Stop @ the door w/the bell, encourageing him to ring it. It may take awhile, as he will be distracted by the idea of a walk. As soon as he touches the bell, immediately open the door & take him for a walk. In this trick, the reward is a walk instead of a treat, so be sure to introduce this concept early on.

4)As u return home from ur walk, get him excited to go inside w/promise of a treat or dinner. Again, have him paw at a bell hung from the door before opening it. It could take several mins. to ring the bell, so practice when u r not in a hurry.

What to Expect: Consistency in enforcing the bell to go in/out rule will speed up the learning process. You'll also need to be very responsive to the bells in the beginning-if u hear them ringing, rush to open the door. This beats barking or scatching @ the door, so try to reward his politeness w/a walk as often as possible.

Ringing the Bell
by: Anonymous

That is awesome these dogs are so smart! I also trained Della to ring a set of bells when she wants out. The problem is she now rings them to chase things primarily squirrels it is frustrating but at least she learned the association of the door and the bells. How I trained her was with a clicker we went to Southern ohio and bought a set of bells from a leather shop and anytime she walked up to the bell I would click and treat. From there I attached a small keychain to the bells that she could grab with her teeth. She learned quickly to make the sound and then we put the bells on the door. Anytime she went near them she got a treat. Eventually it became clear to her that if I ring these I get to go outside and maybe get a cookie too. We call her treats cookies because she gets more excited that way :)

Ringing the bell
by: Carolyn

Your Coton is beautiful. My little girl is 9 months old, and I've been trying to train her to ring the bells on the door knob, but so far I've been unsuccessful. Would you share how you did it, please?
Thanks.

HAPPY PUPPY
by: sherrycottoncandie

Hi Zoey,

You are sure a cutie pie, sounds as though you are very very smart to be so young and trained. Tell your mommy that puppy hair can be a nightmare until it all gets out......But once it does, it is not that difficult to keep long. I found out the hard way that you MUST brush daily, I failed to do that and had to have Cotton shaved.

Good luck to you and hope to see more pics of you as you grow up. You are just so adorable. You look like a happy little girl.

Zoey
by: Vicky & Jonah (Az)

She is absolutely beautiful/gorgeous. The hair in the brush is normal. Jonah did not chg. hair until about 13 mos. I almost wanted to cry since it was so daunting I could not figure out what I was doing wrong even though I brushed or combed him daily. He still has that soft soft fur yet once it chgd for the better.

He also was a great walker right off then about 1 1/2 he started the faze of when we passed a dog he would bark at them as if vicious which we worked through by spending more time at the dog park. Ohh the puppy days. Yet they just get more wonderful. He is such a delight. Enjoy & cherish all. Wonderful picture.
