General TIps

HI, we just purchased a 9 week old boy we call CoCo.We have had him for two days and unfortunately my wife and I work 6-8 hrs a day. While he is so young we have decided to crate train him so that he can sleep in the crate at night and we can put in the crate while we are at work. We aren't big fans of it but while he is so small figured this was the best solution. My questions are. Has anyone else done this before and what are your general tips? We essentially just let him whine it out at night and he eventually falls asleep, same when we go to work. We tried leaving food and a water bowl in the cage with him but both times became a bit of a mess. So, may not do that again. We play with him for about 4-5 hrs in the morning and 4-5 hrs in the evening, this will obviously be more on the weekends. General tips would be help. When he gets older (and potty trained) we will let him roam more. Lastly, is it common for him to bury his little head into a blanket when laying next to me on the couch? Thank you

Crate training is great till they are ready NEW
by: Anonymous

yes, crate training extremely useful for our dog Lucky. Side benefit -helps them learn to hold and do pee and potty outside the house. we also left him initially (3-4 months) 6-8 hours during the weekday and played with him once we came home. Initially, I kept a camera so I can watch him and hear him from the office as well. To make sure he does not cry.

We did 3-4 months of crate training and then left him in the master bedroom with the door closed. Then, once we knew he does not harm himself or the good in the home now he is allowed to roam the whole house while we are out. But he loves sitting in the living room sofa ledge and watching outside from the window + guarding the home:).

Note: after 2 months of crate training he slept with us on master bedr..so he is pampered more than our kids.

Thank you for the feedback. I have purchased him a play pen and hope to start him in it tomorrow. Should also be a good place to keep him while doing some chores around the house.

Playpen NEW
by: Anonymous

We bought a pet playpen for use during the day and attached a water bottle. The playpen was inexpensive and worked like a charm, and the water bottle kept the water mess to a minimum. You can put a wee wee pad in the corner of the playpen if your use them. Our boy is 16 months old now and we still use it when we go out during the day. He has more room to move around, but it keeps him safe. He sleeps in his crate at night, but he'd probably be happy to sleep in his playpen. The crate just fits better in the corner of our bedroom and he's used to sleeping in it at night.
