Do you feed a coton de tulear puppy adult dog food instead of puppy food?

Do you feed a coton de tulear puppy adult dog food instead of puppy food? My breeder said to feed only adult food - no puppy food.

I don't know what to feed her. I bought Fromm puppy food and now I'm afraid to feed it to her.

Puppy Food
by: Vicky & Jonah (Az)

Puppy Food is a good food for puppy's. I feel food has to do with there stress & energy level during the day. Are they in agility or field & obedience etc.?

I realize that there are as many dog food brands as there are candy bars. Halloween day humor. I say check the recall lists for the last 2 yrs?

As long as you buy what u can afford ur dog will be fine. A healthy dog comes from exercise, play, love, socialization & taking care of there teeth.

There are so many receipes for healthy homemade cookies, treats, lean meats or stews to enhance their food. This will also help control allergies.

If they are chewing at there feet alot. Try wipeing there feet off at the end of the day. Then use a dogs foot cream that protects from the elements of the day. U can purchase at any pet store.

U can use vaseline or the old fashion bag balm also. A little vaseline every once & a while also helps with hair balls. Good luck.

What's your Coton eating today?
by: Connie

This is more of a poll to see what we are feeding our Cotons?

Orijen, Arden Grange, or chicken and rice, have been mentioned a few times.

What about you?

Coton pup (10 months)
by: Anonymous

I have a Coton puppy who is just over 10 months old. I am having some trouble with finding a dry food that wont upset her stomach. I do mix her dry with some wet food, generally using Evo. Any suggestions on what dry food has worked well? She is back on Wellness after switching to California Naturals and not having the best of luck.

What to feed puppies
by: Anonymous

Most puppy foods have too much of everything and the calcium to phospherous ratio isn't appropriate for bone development. The bones grow too fast and the ligaments get stretched out. That being said, Fromm's Puppy is very good and the ca:ph ratio is correct. Most adult dry kibble labeled "all stages" is good for puppies as well. This is new research & information has been presented at many breeder & canine reproductive conferences.

PUPPY VS ADULT FOOD
by: KATHY

I FED TRISCUIT PUPPY FOOD, AND THEN AT THE AGE OF 1 SWITCHED OVER TO ADULT FOOD.
I RECENTLY PUT HER ON INOVA, BUT SHE STILL WOULD RATHER EAT HER BIG SISTERS FOOD...PEDIGREE LARGE BREED. I REALIZE PEDIGREE IS NOT THE BEST FOOD, BUT THAT IS WHAT SHE WANTS....I PUT A FEW OF THE PEDIGREE CHUNKS IN HER INOVA, BUT SHE WILL PICK OUT THE PEDIGREE. ANY ADVICE ON WHETHER TO JUST STICK TO THE INOVA. WILL SHE EAT IT WHEN SHE IS HUNGARY, OR SHOULD I MIX IT? ANY HELP IS GREATLY APPRECIATED. THANKS, KATHY

I give my boys and girl a variety of foods, chicken, turkey, beef, lamb, bison, rabbit - this way if I do switch I don't have a problem with loose stools. Good luck - I only by good brands from the pet shop - all natural - and my Vet didn't recommend vitamins with all the vitamins they get in their food. I use to give my older dogs the vitamins - our last little boy (poodle) lived to be 17 1/2 years young, Pepe - and he was. Good Luck.

Feeding Spanky
by: Dee

Hi All:

I too was conflicted by this but after much research found that feeding Puppy food for the 1st year would be best for the same reasons the others were saying (higher in protein and fat etc). Spanky is doing well on the Blue Buffalo puppy diet. We tried to switch it (why i don't know since he was doing well) and he had loose stool for a week (and we did it gradually, he just didn't do well on the holistic Nutro). Since Blue Buffalo is a great food, we are sticking with it. After a year, we plan on feeding him the adult foods. :-) Good luck with your Coton!

Puppy food for my Coton
by: Sherry (Alaska)

I fed my Coton, Cindy, and the poodles Nutro Natural Choice Puppy dry with a little bit of the Natural Choice Puppy wet mixed in for the 1st year. After that, I switched them to the same only in the adult version for small breeds. They all like it and are doing very well. Cindy was underweight when I got her from the breeder at 13 weeks old(according to the vet). The breeder told me she would only be about 8 pounds. However, she is now 11 pounds and quite healty. (She is about 14 months old now.) As a matter of fact, I'm worried that she will become overweight if I'm not careful. I make my own peanut butter biscuits which they love, and they get Greenies a couple of times per week.
Many people have commented on their finicky eater Cotons, but I have not hat that problem. Cindy loves to eat.

Good luck with your new baby!

adult vs puppy food
by: Gale

Nothing frustrates me than the conflicting advice from breeders and Vets when it comes to proper nutrition for our Cotons (or any dog for that matter).

Some experts advise only to feed puppy food because it's specially formulated for the needs of a growing dog. These diets are usually higher in protein and fat. Others advise that an adult formula is better for Cotons IF the food contains the higher protein and fat content that growing pups need.

The bottom line is don't be afraid to feed your dog; just select a high quality food (not from the supermarket) and monitor how she's doing.

Luc got puppy food for his first year and did well with that, but I think he would have done just as well with an adult food.

What did everyone else feed their Coton puppies - adult or puppy food?

Puppy Food??
by: Deborah

My husband reminded me our breeder recommended adult food for our two Cotons. Her reasoning is that they don't get proper nutrition from "puppy food". Both of our are thriving... We started w/Inova food and now have on Healthy Balance...also we give them a daily Vitamin also recommended by the breeder. It is NuVet Plus...and I order online/call when needed...they LIKE it!! Good luck...to you and your new COTON!
