Our male dog still squats when he pees. He is 9 months old. Will this change?

My Male Coton Still Squats... NEW
by: Shara

My male coton, Leo, is 2 years old now and he still squats when he pees. I have read that a male is more likely to not lift his leg if he is neutered, especially when younger. I had Leo neutered a bit later than suggested, at one year old. He never did start to lift his leg though, which I'm glad about. But this can change at any age. And as the other comments have said, every dog is different, and even females can show this behavior sometimes.

female dog who lifts leg to pee NEW
by: Pat

All dogs are different. My Coton girl-Rhylie is 4 years old. She is a smaller Coton weighing 8 pounds. She has always lifted her leg to pee. She is a tiny little thing with short legs. That could be why she lifts a leg. But there is nothing wrong with her-they all are different. I have a friend who has a 2 year old female Yorkie and she squats sometimes and other times she lifts her leg to pee.

Female who lifts her leg when peeing NEW
by: Anonymous

Hi Kim, we had a male maltese who always squatted. Our Coton is female, BUT we have a Cavalier King Charles Spaniel, female who nearly always lifts her leg to pee.... the funny world of dogs eh, so don't think you have a problem with him. Best wishes. Viv
