Dark brown eye staining

by Connie

My coton is almost 5 years old and for the past year she has had terrible brown eye staining. The vet says it is allergies but it never gets better even with the meds. Does anyone else have this problem, the stain is as dark as her eyes.

Distilled water for runny eyes perhaps NEW
by: Anonymous

Try using distilled water for a few months and see if it helps. I have used it for over a year and my puppy does not have red staining, he does have black chunky bits but they are easy to pull off. Lately I have started giving him well water and so far so good.....

Tear stains

Agree with the foods that can cause staining. I use glass bowl for water as I heard the metal bowls can also cause staining. I also purchased natural tear staining tablets from Amazon that helps a lot.

Food and staining NEW
by: Gale

I agree with the previous comment about food. Neither of my Cotons ever had staining issues until recently. As a result of Lucy’s weight gain due to seizure medication, the vet put her on Science Diet temporarily to help her lose weight.

Staining around her mouth started immediately after the switch in food (from homemade or fresh diet to processed kibble). She is now off the processed food, and I anticipate that staining will no longer be an issue.

If there are no medical issues, food and water are always the first place to look as a cause for staining. Look at the ingredients - are there preservatives or ingredients that cause allergic reactions? Does your tap water have minerals that cause staining?
