Crate training and location of crate at night?

Hi everyone. This question is regarding if your Coton is crate trained for night sleeping and where do you have the crate? Bedroom or other area? I am told that Cotons will not be happy unless the crate is in your bedroom. Anyone have experience with this?

Open-top Crate on floor beside bed
by: Anonymous

Our 2 year old Coton came to live with us at age 11 weeks. His soft sided crate was, and is, on the floor next to our bed. It has a top that opens. Whenever he cried I placed my hand inside letting him know I was nearby, with a gentle shush and a pat. We also had a very dim nightlight (glow) which helped him see me. It wasn't very long before we had no whining at bedtime. After we were sure he was potty trained, we permanently zipped closed the top and opened the side of the crate. Now he enters and leaves as he wants.

crating at night
by: Anonymous

Our coton sleeps in her crate in the garage at night. We moved her to the garage from the bedroom because unless we were in bed she wanted to be out of her crate with us. This did not work when it came to getting ready early in the am, like 5:30. Our older retriever puppy sleeps in the garage too. Our coton was crated in our room for a week before we moved her and she slept through the night without one sound, we would know we use a baby monitor. It may have been easy for her because the other puppy is in the garage too, separate crate.

Crate Training
by: Rosavic

We got our Guinness at 8 weeks old, he is now 15 weeks old. From night one we crated him and put the crate on a stand so Guinness' crate is the same level as our bed. We close the crate door because we don't want him to fall. His crate is on my husband's side of the bed. We never had a problem of Guinness whining or disturbing us through the night. He is our alarm clock in the morning, wakes up at 6:30 am to go potty.
Mind you, he whines if he is on the crate and my husband or myself is not on our bed yet.
We have a routine for Guinness before bed time. Wash his paws, his bum-bum, clean his eye tears, brush his teeth-swab his gums, wipe his hair with damp clean face towel and brush is hair. After all that, he knows it is bedtime and just goes to his crate.

crate location
by: sherry cotton candie

Lots of ideas here, our two are in our bedroom at night. we did try not having our first with us but she cried and of course that broke our hearts. we have a crate (door open), dog bed and and old pillow all down on the floor on the side wall. Our coton is mostly on our bed almost all night. our rescue moves from one place to the other. She mostly hides in the crate.

On the bed is not the best choice but we started that in motels to keep her quiet and now it seems to be a given. It does distrupt our sleep but she is just such a baby.......perfect would be in the room and off the bed but it is to late for us now.

once they get a routine it seems difficult to change so good luck in choosing whats right for you and yours. they are so very special.

Crate training
by: Anonymous

We started crate training from the beginning. The 1st 3 nites my husband slept on the floor with his hand over the crate. We have an 8 yr old labe who usually sleeps on her bed at nite. About 3 in the. Morn lab jumps on bed. Bebe starts to howl. Very very loud. We decided 3 weeks ago to put both in their crate at nite in the family room. We finally get a good nite sleep. It is a pleasure for us to have them In their own space aT nite. Yes we watch the news with them on the bed. However we are both seniors and need some rest. Working out great. I think it works out so great because bebe loves the lab and knows she is near. Be be will be 1 yr old soon. Hope this helps

Location of Crate

Our bathroom is off the bedroom and where Logan's crate is located. He can see us at night and feels secure. If he needs to go out during the night he whines and one of us will let him out.

Nite time crate
by: Sophie - Wisconsin

Our Coton Sophie is 3 1/2 yrs old and has been nite-time crate trained since the beginning...She will lay on our bed and watch the news with us and then when she decides it is time, she will jump down and get in her crate..We have always kept the crate in the bedroom and our Coton Sophie seems very satisfied with that...at least according to our last discussion with her.......

When I got my second coton I put the crate on the bed. As long as he could see me everything was fine. Only problem was my older coton wanted him out of the crate and kept trying to get the little door open. The older one whined until I left the little door open so the little one could get out. I learned after the first one that this is a breed that does not like to be left alone.

I tried putting the crate on the floor and the pup and the older one made such a ruckus I gave up. He sleeps on the bed.

Crate at night.
by: Heather and Domino

When Domino needs to be crated for the night, he is in either our room or the room of our sons next to someone's bed. He did not like being in another room! Everyone sleeps better when he is nearby. : ) Good luck!

Crate at night
by: Sherry & Cinderella

Cinderella (Coton) and her step sisters (toy poodles) are crated at night in the family room while we are in our bedrooms. We do this because our daughter is allergic to dogs, so they are not allowed in the bedroom areas. (If it were just me, I would have all 3 sleeping on my bed!) All 3 dogs will be 4 years old in April. It is true, Coton's do not like being alone. Cindy would cry frequently or wake us to go out in the middle of the night. the poodles never let out a peep, but the Coton is another story. She is very vocal when she is not 100% happy. She is much better now, but she woke us frequently for at least first 2 years. She is very food motivated, they get treats when they go "nite-nite" and Cindy is always first to run to bed. Good luck with your new "baby"!

Bedroom Crate
by: Donna and Lily

Since I got my Lily at 12 weeks she sleeps in a small crate on the bed and from night one she has been perfect at night. If you don't have the room on the bed, put the crate on a night stand. I was told that if you keep them at eye level with you they will be content and that has worked out great for us!
