I have two cotons and if I’m gone more then 6 hours I leave them together in a large kennel placed under the ceiling fan and in front of the tv which is playing to keep them company. If less then 6 hours we close bedroom doors but they can roam the house. Tv turned on. When we get home they are standing in the window happy to see us. Our girl is ok by herself but her brother doesn’t like being left. In fact I tell my husband that he is yelling at me because he stands there and barks at me.

(Re, greyhound. I think the author means Italian greyhound, and they are velcro dogs, meaning they have to be with you at all times.)

An affenpinscher breeder nade sure to train her affenpinscher puppies to tolerate her being gone for 5-6 hours by not being around them 5-6 hours when they were puppies. But also usually people get multiple affenpinschers. She also recommended that people do not stay home with the puppy all day when they first get it, but to go about their regular routine.

I think if you have a breeder who is careful like this and do not set the puppy's expectation up for you being around all the time, and maybe had a dog or other animal that it got along with (dogs don't always get along with each other, sometimes the presence of another dog makes them nervous, I think littermates would have a better chance at getting along), then... I think it might work. Cotons are companion animals.

I know cats sleep when you aren't around for 5 hours. Some purebred cats were bred to be extremely social, but you can check if the breed is or isnt, or adopt a rescue cat. Cats form good bonds with usually a single person.

If you want to leave your Coton ... NEW

... at home alone for 5-6 hours, then better get yourself a greyhound, a small Florentine greyhound. Cotons don't like to be left alone. They are a Companion Breed after all.

Yes but no ideal NEW

If you have taken them to the bathroom just before leaving and they have proper food, water, and space (if possible) then your coton should be fine. I would try not to make a habit of leaving for that long, if you do need to it might be good to find someone willing to drop by to take your pet out.
It is also wise to leave some sort of chew or full kong to occupy them.
My coton has been left that long on several occasions without issue but I always make sure to follow the previously listed steps and get someone to take her out at some point whenever possible.
