Can a coton be born with all black hair

by Phil
(Phoenix Az)

We just purchased a coton but it is almost all black. The breeder showed us the pictures of the mom and dad. They were white. There were a couple of white in the litter and one with black around the eyes and this one. Is solid black sometimes in the litter or do you think we got a different breed. Her fur is really silky

Black Coton NEW
by: JB

I have a all black 3 1/2 year old Coton I got from a breeder in San Diego, He is all black with white paws and chest. He is the smartest dog I’ve ever owned and seems to know what I want before I even tell he. What a great breed !

Black Coton? NEW
by: Anonymous

Purebred Cotons are not all black. The first one ever born in the US who was all black was born in the 1990s from European Coton parents. Many Cotons in Europe were bred with other breeds, probably Havanese or a terrier to get a black one and then registered as Cotons. After several generations of breeding with Cotons, that black gene can still be there and pop up occasionally. It probably means your dog is a tiny part something else but it is very possible your breeder didn't even know. There are lots of mixes out there that are sold as purebred Cotons so whether it goes back many generations or just one, just enjoy your dog and don't worry about it.

I have a Black Coton NEW
by: Julie

My Henry is a pure bred Coton. He is mostly black with white on his chest and belly. He was born in a litter of white and black puppies. White is the dominant color but black hair can happen with these dogs. I did a search to find other people with black Corona and they are out there. I also have a white Coton named Holly from the same breeder. Love them SO much!!!

That is quite interesting. I am wondering now if our dog is actually a Coton. Hopefully the lady isn't a scammer. We still love our little Oreo no matter what.

Interesting. I looked up the phone number given by one of the posters and that is the same breeder that we got my daughters all black Coton 12/23/2017. We were shown pics of two white parents too and met by a girl claiming to be selling them for her grandmother.

Black Coton
by: Bentleys Mom

My puppy had a gray patch over the eye....3 patches on his back and gray ears. As he grew older the color left his eye completely and his back patches ate there, but lighter. Ears are also white. The vet told me this happens as they mature....turning all white. The skin on his body still has patches, but the hair growing from it is white....maybe a few black hairs sprinkled throughout. He is beautiful no matter his coloring.

Coton colors at birth
by: Iris Miller

My Coton Tuffy came from two pure white Coton parents. He was multicolored with black around the eyes ( i have posted those pictures on this web page in the past) whe Tuffy was several months old he had very long hair and had to be groomed for the first time. The groomer shaved him to the skin because he was matted under the hair and she did not want to deal with the matted hair. Tuffy and I were horrified and he was traumatized. You could see all the different color spots on his skin, but when his hair grew back, he was a different dog, all white wit some grey hair on his ears.
Maybe that black puppy will change color when he matures?
Best of luck and love
Tuffy and mom

Did you get her/him? from a breeder in Prescott? I was looking at a solid black one from up there a couple of months ago. I snoozed and I loozed. (Lol!) I wonder if you got him. He is adorable.
