Butt Licking

Need advice on treating butt licking that is staining the anal area in my 4 1/2 year old boy.

He eats gluten free food. His anal glands are not full.

Vet says it´s allergies because he also gets occasional ear infections. He´s prescribed a steroid based shampoo for the anal area, spray and apoquel 3.6 mg tablet once a day. Just started with the tablets 2 days ago but don´t like reading about all the possible side effects.

I just hate seeing the red-brown stains on my beautiful little boy. and thinking that he´s uncomfortable. I´ve also noticed that he has some scabs around the skin in back of his pipi area and he licks there too. Thank yoiu for help.

Red stains NEW
by: Lexi's Mom

Some good news! After reading your comments about the red stains from licking, I decided to add a teaspoon of plain yogurt to Lexi's food to see if it would help. Wow, what a surprise when she did not wake us up in the middle of the night with her licking. It has been five days now and the red stain around her mouth and paws is fading away. She hardly does any licking at all and we all are sleeping through the night. The best part is she loves the yogurt. This has made all of us very happy. Happy Thanksgiving to all our Coton friends.

I'm sorry to hear about your furbaby licking. I don't know how to solve that problem, but I trim the tear stains from Charlie using grooming scissors. Works like a charm. I hope you resolve the licking issues. I bet it's allergies.

Good luck,
Charlie and Mom Connie

Mine too! NEW
by: Anne

My dog Bella has the same problem regarding licking the same areas. When she recently had surgery and could not go out, the licking and scratching completely stopped. Once she started on her walks, the problems returned. I think this is an outside environmental allergy. You can try over the counter antihistamines if you haven't done that first. The dog food should be grain and soy free. I share your concern about the allergy med that was prescribed. I haven't resorted to the BARF diet or cooking her food yet. A holistic vet might be able to help you heal him naturally. I haven't done that yet, either. In the past few days her allergies seemed to have lessened and the weather is changing. I also gave her a course of probiotics to strengthen her immune system.

Hope this input was helpful.
