Winter Grooming

by NARITA
(OKLAHOMA)

We had Bill groomed in a summer cut when the weather got warm. I love it but I also like his hair longer. It is just the extra brushing I don't like. He does real well till you get to his back legs and rear end. Then he's done!

My question is how many of you allow your dog's hair to grow out in the winter?

Is it eye brows? Matting NEW
by: Joyce

I have a one year old coton - Pierre. I have had him since October & have been bathing him myself. His hair is long & I brush him every day. Lately after his bath he has been matting a lot around his neck area. My questions are: what should I do to prevent the mats, Is the collar (1/2 inch thick ) to big? what type of collar should I get?, I also want to know about the hair around his eyes. His hair is to long in front & he can't see. I had put it into a band to keep it out of his eyes but there is hair right above his eyes about an inch. Is that eye brows that needs to be trimmed? It doesn't go in the rubber band & I think it would hurt. Should I have that clipped short? Joyce

Keep it long is you can
by: Lana

Hello NARITA,
I try keep my Cotons long & luscious all year round, not saying it is always easy. One of my Cotons has 9" long hair all year round & the other a bit shorter 5-6", he has more problems.
I am always looking for a perfect combination of grooming products to save brushing time.
Dirty streets, lots of rain and mud is not the best place for a walk, but...
I started to see more mats lately.
Every season required different approach as I see.
I can recommend 3 grooming items that saved my dog coats this month:
1.Bio-Groom Silk Creme Rinse conditioner for Dogs - NEW!
2.Chris Christensen - 27 mm Fusion Oblong Pin Brush
3.Cherry Knoll Coat Dressing AEROSOL

Fast & easy brushing, saved me lots of time and efforts to keep it going smooth again.
Try it, it works. The brush is my favorite now.

Winter groom
by: Susan

Smokey and bandit go short in summer and long in winter. I have a nice groomer at Petsmart for bath and cut grooms. $49 each dog. Just a bath and brush is $25ish. They told me I could stop by and wait and they would brush them for $6 each. I am planning on trying that in January

Winter grooming
by: Iris Miller

I let Tuffy's hair grow to keep him warmer in the snow, he hates wearing a coat, so I don't put one on every time we go outside, only in heavy snow and freezing cold. I discovered something by accident, after I brushed and combed and trimmed Tuffy's hair I did my hair and put some argan oil on it to tame the frizzies down. I had some left on my hands so I wiped the oil on Tuffy's hair too. I decided,, go for it, put more oil on my hands and combed it through his hair with my fingers. It was chemical free and worked really well! The only place he got a couple of tangles was behind his ears and I cut them out. I have not had to comb and brush his hair since I put the oil on it weeks ago! I did once, just to make sure the loose hairs came off and checked for matting. In summer he get a short cut.

Growing hair longer in winter
by: Cherie's Mom

We have an adorable two year old named Chewie.
We do let his hair grow longer in the winter, but not to the extent that it gets to long to brush. Chewie is groomed once a month and the groomer keeps his hair at a manageable level.
Once the warm weather arrives, he gets a short cut.
This seems to work for the climate in western Ohio.
