Physical characteristics of the Coton de Tulear

My question is regards to physical characteristics of the Coton de Tulear. I have 2 Malagasy Cotons from different breeders. Kauloo is 3 and has all characteristics classic for Cotons. Kalani is just a year but is much smaller at 12 pounds and his second coat did not seem to come in. His coat is much thinner and lays nicely with much fewer matting issues.

I adore both of them just as they are but am a bit disappointed at the differences. I chose to get 2 from the same fairly rare breed to have them similar. I am not an experienced dog owner as these are my first dogs.

Can you educate me as to why this would be? Are these variations common?

Thanks,

Just Curious

My coton puppy also didn't blow a puppy coat but now at 17 months old she is starting to. That's the nice thing about cotons, no two are the same.

Spanky small

My Spanky is only 6 lbs at 8 months - a runt to say the least. Cotons can range between 8 - 16 lbs. Regardless of the size, they are a wonderful breed!

My Coton, Gaston weighed from 17-19lbs & tall for the breed with black on his ears & face. His personality was larger than life!

physical characteristics...

Well....we have two males who are half brothers. One is 3 the other almost 2 years old. Finnegan is the elder one and his coat is thick and curly and believe it or not....he is a whopping 18 lbs...extraordinarily large for this breed. And Reilly, his younger half-brother (same sire) has silky, straighter white coat and is 15 1/2 lbs. So, what I am trying to say there will be, in my view, variations of weight, size, colour, temperment, etc....even w/same sire...Although I must tell you both are loving, intelligent, fabulous companions. Even in the same litter you will have keen differences...
