Pee pad training for mature dog

by Mary
(Toronto, Ontario)

I would like to train my 2-1/2 year old coton to use a pee pad. Up until now we have trained her to go outside and she rings a bell by the door. Since she may be spending more time at home on her own I would like to train her on the pads in addition to going outside when we are here. Can anyone offer any advise?

Where you put it would be totally up to where is more convient for you. I put ours in our bathroom which has tile and out of the way.
if the basement has been off limits it might not be a good place.
Does your dog have run of the house or confined to certain area?

Anywhere that is out of the way -- and no we have never smelled a urine smell. Sometimes however, there is a poopy smell. I spray lysol in the room and dispose of the pad right away. I have two dogs so I put down two pads at a time. They are not always used but I like having them down just in case.

Keep trying on the pad and it will click for your dog. I'm sure any of the sprays would work, I know the wee wee did for mine. Hope it will not take long but do not get frustrated. It will happen. Try when you know its time to go out.

What's a good area to set it up in? NEW
by: Mary

I've tired a couple of time so far with out luck. She rings the bell, and then I take her upstairs to the pee pad, and tell her to "Go pee pee" It's what I say outside too, but she looks at me funny and lays down in the middle of the pad. I will go and buy some of the spray today and hopefully that makes the difference.

Right now I have the pad upstairs in my office, but not sure if I should start with it in the basement. The basement has been off limits to her until now since it's where we have the cat litter. How smelly does it get if they use it during the day when you aren't there and it sits until you get home? I am not sure I want Eau de Poop smell in my office.

It should not be difficult to train your dog, we rescued one that was 4 yrs old and she does great with them. I bought something called wee wee made by 4 paws. It doesn't smell real good (guess that is why it works). I started by just spraying once in the center of the pad. I know longer have to use it as both of mine will go to the pad when left alone.

I love the pads as I don't feel guilty if we are later coming home.
so easy to just toss them out. I used key words "go pee" when training outside so did the same when taking them to the pad. Be sure and really praise or reward with treat when they do use it.

Good luck!

Pee Pee Pad Training NEW
by: Cathy & Jasmine

This is so easy, at least for this breed. I trained Jasmine in less that 2 weeks! Pick one or two spots in your home that you want your dog to go pee pee or poop. I used a spray (wish I could remember the name?) you can probably find it in Pet Smart or Petco. I sprayed the pad and it attracts them to the pad. Jasmine was 15 months old when I got her and now she is so well trained even if I move her pad to clean etc she goes right to where the pad has been moved to and will pee pee there! Good luck!
