How do I keep my Coton de Tulear's muzzle clean?

by Karen

I have a question on how to keep my dog's muzzle clean. She has a drippy eye which I try to clean everyday but the drips end up making her muzzle stink. She goes to the groomers once a month or sooner for her bath and I wash her feet in between when they get dirty from walks.

Washing her face is trickier as I only use a wet cotton ball or washcloth with no soap. I saw something about hydrogen peroxide. Can you reprint?

Eyes and muzzle cleaning
by: Jolie LaFleur's mom, Tammy

Jolie is solid white, with just a very few strands of light brown color in her ears, so any thing shows up on her face. She does have a problem her tears running down her face some and leaving her eyes and around her mouth stained red. I had the same problem with Prissy, my poodle who crossed the Rainbow Bridge shortly before Jolie came to us. I used Angel Eyes for her and it made a great difference! I don't have to use it as often for Jolie, but it works when I do. I did find it a little cheaper at drugstore.com than it is on the Angel Eyes web site. Go and look at some of the pics there, and you will see a big difference.

thanks
by: Karen

thank you everyone for your suggestions. I am trying the 10 to 1 solution of hydrogen peroxide. I guess the trick is to stay on top of it and clean every day, even though she hates it.

Peroxide mix
by: Vicky & Jonah (Az)

The mix is 1 part peroxide to 10 parts water. I use a saline (peoples eyewash) solution bottle when empty since u can squirt on stains & wipe off with cotton or baby washcloths. It is in my home vet book so I know it is safe. Avoid eyes.

I keep Jonahs hair on the eyes that get stained feathered short with thinning shears (ur groomer can do this for u) & will use a flea comb daily to clean the hair there. When I miss a day or 2 & the build up gets hard thats when I wet w/solution & comb or wipe. Hope this gives u diff. options.

Cleaning eyes
by: Anonymous

We use angel eyes for tiffany. We don't have to clean anywhere near as much (which she hates)

clean Coton eyes
by: Iris Miller

use a separate clean cotton pad for each eye with plain warm water and wipe gently away from. not into, the eye, use a fresh pad if you have to go over it again to prevent infection. Use the same method to wash the face and muzzle. I would check with my Vet first, because an odor can mean some kind of infection.I don't think a drippy eye is a normal occurance. Like the saying goes"better safe than sorry".
best of luck,
Iris

tearless shampoo
by: GASTON

I use baby shampoo on a washcloth with warm water, so it does not pull his hair...
