RE: Big Cotons
by: Anonymous

We have a larger size Coton as well. He is roughly 21 lbs, 14 inches high and 29 inches long. He is not a tall coton. He was the largest of his mother's first litter. Both of his parents are under 16lbs. Our vet said that he is not overweight. We also get comments regarding his larger size. His diet has been a hybrid raw diet, with kibble and two tablespoons of wet food in the morning and raw with kibble in the evening. He loves to play and rough house with larger dogs. So be it.

big cotons
by: sherry

ALL I HAVE READ AND BEEN TOLD IS THAT THEY USUALLY CAN GET UP TO 15-18 LBS. MY FEMALE IS NOW 9 MONTHS OLD AND WEIGHS ALMOST 10. SHE LOOKS BIGGER BECAUSE OF HER LONG HAIR.

THEY ARE WONDERFUL WITH CHILDREN AND EVERYONE ELSE BUT WE HAVE FOUND OUT IN PUBLIC SHE WANTS TO SHY AWAY FROM KIDS WHEN THEY START TRYING TO HANDLE HER HEAD AND FACE. SHE NEVER HAS BIT BUT ONE TIME DID GROWL. I NOW HOLD HER AND KEEP MY HAND AROUND HER FACE WHEN THE KIDS ARE VERY YOUNG. SAFER FOR ALL.

I THINK IF THEY ARE EXPOSED DAILY TO CHILDREN THEY WOULD BE PERFECT. NOT A BETTER BREED ANYWHERE!!!! GOOD LUCK!

Weight of a Coton
by: Denise

They say that the runt of the litter is not healthy. We would like to purchase a Coton and want a smaller one. Is a six pound unhealthy?
Thanks for any info.

Coton weight/height
by: Fiona's Mom

My coton is about 13 pounds and stands about knee-high. She is delightful with my toddler granddaughter but of course, as with any dog, watch carefully because kids can grab, squeeze or scare the most mild-mannered dog and cause them to react. My dog just plain loves people.

Big Cotons
by: Sarah

Am I the only one who has a big Coton? He weighs around 30 lbs. He's not fat - just big. He's not a tall Coton - just big. As a puppy, he was twice as big as his litter mates.

Even though 30 lbs is not that big for dogs in general, every time someone sees him they remark on how big he is. I guess people aren't used to seeing these cute little dogs that big.

Does anyone else have a bigger Coton?

How Big is Your Cotton
by: Sandy

I just took my cotton for her last number of shots. The vet said that she is up to 5.1 lbs. I know that they say that most will end up around 10-15 lbs. When I am saying 5.1 most of that must be hair weight. She still have a lot of time to grow, she is just 4 mo. old. But, for the pound; one of the funnest dogs you can have around. As for being around kids my is still a puppy and sometimes when she is playing her teeth come out like most poppies. But, still I try to keep her away from young kids. Sometimes kids forgets that they are just a small dog and other times the puppy forget that they are playing with small kids.

My two female Cotons weigh in about 10 lbs. each. I have to watch one, as she has a tendency to get fat. They are both 8 yrs. old. Different litters. They love kids, just make sure the kids are not rough with them....they are little dogs and can get hurt.

Coton Research

Like everyone has said, you could not ask for a better breed of dog to mix with kids. I have 8 grandkids and Tassie LOVES them all. In fact whenever we are out in public, she will spot a child a mile a way and start to wag her tail and go "hunt" them down to play. As with any animal however, you can not trust them together without supervision. I have had large dogs all my life and have had many many breeds. While i have had some "favorites" i must be honest, Tassie truly is the love of my life, and can not see me owning any other breed going forward. They live to please and they love to tease. Also something you will hear Coton owners talk about are the "zummies". Its the greatest thing to watch them go low and run supper fast in big circles. While they have "hair" vs fur, they require alot of grooming, so be prepared. My little bundle of joy is now 5. She is over weight for her breed, but suffered from the food poisioning back in 2007 and never got the weight off, she is 16 lbs.
Good luck with your endeavor for your coton, enjoy, Lynda

Great with kids!
by: snaphappy

My Coton, Izzie, is 3.5 years old and weighs about 9 lbs. She is wonderful with kids! We actually selected this breed because they have a reputation of being great with kids.

my Coton's
by: Cathy

I have 3 Coton's 2 females and 1 male. I think that they do vary in size my male is larger than my females. My females are half the size of my male and he weighs 6.6 kilos. They are brilliant with children and people in general. They are loving, and so eager to please............all in all I really don't think that you could get a better pet than a Coton. There are a lot of websites if you put in Coton de Tulear you will find stacks of info.

size and weight
by: dee

Coton's are probably your safest breed when it comes to kids. Of course, like any other dog, that begins and ends with dedicated training, but with coton's it seems like a breeze because they are very eager to please...

My coton is a runt, at just about 5 months is aprox 6 lbs (ankle hight). Im betting he will be 8lbs at full growth. However, Coton's can be anywhere between 10-16 lbs depending on the sex.

Coton's and children
by: Bacio's mom

In my opinion you couldn't have a better companion for your child than a Coton. If your children are young just make sure they are supervised when with the dog. Our Coton boy Bacio is 4yrs old and weighs in at 8lb. he was the runt of his litter, whereas his brother is a whopping 11lbs.
Cotons are smart, entertaining, eager to please and always ready for love.
