Coton de Tulear with extreme anxiety at bedtime and during the night

by Fran
(North Carolina )

Our Coton, Bailey, is two years old and before two months ago, went to bed with no problems. He slept in his bed and didn’t get up until 7-7:30; no noises at all!

Now he fears going to bed and is reluctant to go into the bedroom. His bed is on the floor beside ours. Last night he got up with me during the night and shivered and cried when I was going back to bed. He grabbed my legs in an effort to keep me from going to bed. This has been going on for two months.

We are at a loss! There is no precipitating event we can think of. He has always had separation anxiety but we have infrequently left him no longer than a couple of hours and placed him in the master bath along with toys, treat puzzles, water, bed, etc. Please help!

No physical problems per Vet
by: Fran

Bailey was checked out by the vet and no physiological issues were found. He is somewhat better about going to bed but only after my husband used doggy CBT to help desensitize him to the bedroom. He still goes into the closet to sleep but is not currently shivering and crying. We are still at a loss to explain his changes in behavior. He "seems" happier! Has anyone ever experienced this behavior by their Coton? Thank you!

Possible fear phase or medical issues?
by: Gale

I’m sorry to hear Bailey is having a rough time. My first thought is to get him to the vet to rule out any medical issues. Right before Lucy started having seizures, she became super anxious. At the time, I thought it was the second fear phase some dogs experience between 6 and 14 months. Bailey seems a little old for this fear phase, but I would definitely have him checked out at the vet.

If there aren’t any physiological reasons for his anxiety, you can check out this page check out this page about helpful calming aids.

Wishing you the best getting to the bottom of this and hope Bailey feels better soon. Let us know!
