Coton Connection: Summertime Coton Life - Issue# 123
June 26, 2025
Welcome Coton Lovers:

I hope you and your Cotons are enjoying the fun and sunshine of this season (if you live in a part of the world where it’s summer). This month’s newsletter was inspired by the brutal heat here in Florida and some emails I received about challenges with leash walking.

And I’m happy that we’ve got some adorable Coton photos and stories to share as well.

Leash Walking Reactivity?

Since I received emails asking for help with leash reactivity and leash pulling this month, I thought I’d share a recent blog post that may help you on your walks.

Volunteering at an animal shelter gives me an opportunity to see dogs react differently when it comes to walking on a leash. Some are scared, some are over excited and some are dying for attention. They each need to be handled based on where they’re at.

You can find the article about leash reactivity and barking here.

Summer walking woes

Depending on where you live in the world, it may be summer and HOT! Here in Florida and much of the east coast of the US, we’re having record heat waves. So walking your dog in these extreme temps poses even more challenges to your dog walks.

Remember these tips for summertime walking safety.

- Take longer walks during cooler hours such as early mornings and late evenings.

- Protect their paws. If possible, stay in grassy or shaded areas on walks since pavement and concrete retain heat.

- Consider dog booties if you don’t have access to grass or shady walking areas.

- If you’re going to be outside for more than a few minutes, take a water bottle and collapsible bowl to keep your Coton hydrated.

- Monitor your dog for signs of heat stroke. Look for excessive drooling, panting, or heavy breathing, agitation or disorientation, weakness or wobbling, vomiting or diarrhea, muscle tremors or seizures, lethargy or unconsciousness. If your dog displays any of these heat stroke symptoms, apply cool water – not ice cold – and call your vet immediately!

Check out more ideas for summer safety here.

And if you’re looking for the best way to keep your dog physically and mentally active indoors, here’s an oldie but goodie article with ideas for these super hot months.

- For those in the US, I hope your July 4th is fun, safe, not too loud or stressful for your dogs.
