How AI Is Changing the Game in Pet Care
You may have noticed the "Fun with AI" section in the newsletter. I’ve been using ChatGPT for everything, from productivity hacks and Etsy ideas to healthy recipes and vacation planning. And honestly, I’m not sure I’d make it out the door without Alexa reminding me what’s on my calendar.
So that got me thinking… if AI is becoming such a big part of our lives, what does it mean for our dogs? Is it helpful? Creepy? Exciting? Too soon to tell?
I went down a bit of a rabbit hole and here’s some of what I found. Let me know what you think. Would you try any of these?
1. Health Monitoring &
Diagnostics
Smart Collars & Trackers:
Devices like Fi Series 3+ and this GPS/health tracker don’t just help you find your dog, they monitor activity, sleep, heart rate, and even signs of discomfort (like licking or scratching). AI interprets the data to detect early signs of illness or stress, so you can catch things before they become problems.
AI Health Check via App:
TTcare lets you take a photo of your dog’s eyes or skin and uses AI to flag potential health concerns - kind of like a diagnostic scanner in your pocket.
Virtual Vet Chat:
Vet Chatbot offers 24/7 virtual advice. It's not a replacement for your vet (yet), but for
questions like, “Is this normal?” or “Can I wait until morning?” it’s a handy tool.
Faster, Smarter Diagnoses:
Behind the scenes, AI is helping vets analyze things like X-rays and blood tests more accurately. It can catch subtle patterns that even trained eyes might miss.
Tailored Treatments:
AI can help customize meds or treatment plans by analyzing your dog’s unique health history, breed tendencies, and response to previous care.
2. Training & Behavior Support
Smart Enrichment Tools:
Devices like Companion use AI to interact with your dog through games, voice commands, and treat rewards, even when you’re not home. It’s like a virtual playdate that builds skills.
Behavior Tracking:
AI can pick up on barking, pacing, or other behaviors and detect triggers like separation anxiety or fear, helping trainers and owners create smarter, more compassionate plans.
Remote Reinforcement:
With some tools, you can work on training cues while you’re out. AI tracks progress and adjusts difficulty, like having a digital dog trainer in your pocket.
Understanding Dog Language:
Tools like Petpuls are working on interpreting barks, tone, and facial expressions!
3. Nutrition & Feeding
Personalized Meal Plans:
Some pet food companies and services analyze your dog’s age, weight, activity level, and health needs to suggest balanced diets (think of it like a meal delivery service, but for dogs).
Nutrition Apps:
There are many, like Daisy.ai that help with meal planning and wellness tracking.
AI Smart Feeders:
Products like this one on Amazon adjust food portions based on real-time health data, preventing overfeeding and promoting a healthy weight.
4. Safety & Tracking
Predictive GPS Tracking:
GPS collars with AI can now predict when a dog might escape by learning their behavior and sending alerts if they stray from a safe zone.
Biometric ID:
AI is now used for facial recognition and even “nose print” ID (like a fingerprint but for dogs). Some home cameras use emotion recognition to detect signs of stress, boredom, or excitement - kind of like a mood ring,
but smarter.
5. Breeding & Genetics
Smarter Breeding Decisions:
AI is being used by breeders to predict hereditary conditions and optimize gene diversity, aiming for healthier litters and long-term breed health.
Tracking Hereditary Risks:
AI can sift through DNA tests and flag patterns in genetic predispositions, helping vets and breeders get ahead of potential issues.
🌟 What’s Next?
This is just the beginning. We're seeing early versions of AI-powered emotional support tools, doggy mental health monitors, and even translation tools aiming to interpret dog vocalizations. (Can you imagine finally understanding what your Coton is trying to say?)
