Veterinarian vs Breeder

What do you do when you get conflicting information from the vet and the breeder?

My vet said to get my Coton spayed at 8 or 9 months prior to first heat cycle, but breeder said to wait until after heat between 12 and 18 months.

Also, vet recommends flea/tick monthly prevention, but breeder says to avoid this because of toxic chemicals.

This is my first female dog and my first Coton, so I’d love some feedback.

When to spay
by: Anonymous

Its best to wait until they are a year to year and a half. You should wait until their growth plates are closed. If you don't closing will be delayed and they will grow taller and have joint problems later.

Spaying puppy

You have to spay by 6 months. Before the first heat. I don't give my Coton flea and tick medicine. Your breeder is right about all the chemicals. The you put in your dog's body the better

Conundrum NEW
by: Susan

Hi - I can relate. W/respect to the spaying, my understanding is that it is best to wait until at least 12 months. So our vet just said bring her in at 8 months. I think it is important to speak to several different professionals and then make a decision. Our Maggie was about 14 months old when we had her spayed. My concern was with how the neutering could impact future health.

W/re: to flea/tick protection, I do want to avoid chemicals that can harm but also very important to avoid tick borne illness. I would like to know what other folks are doing. I am wondering if putting repellents on a cloth and then making a neck tie around the dog's neck might be an effective strategy.
