Should I neuter my eight month old Coton?

My family is divided on the issue of neutering. I don't plan to breed him so I think it's best if we neuter him but my family disagrees and they're making me feel horrible!

Thanks for telling us about this. Very interesting.

Neuter
by: Vicky & Jonah

If u do not plan on breeding having them neutered is usually best for their health against prostrate problems. Talk with your vet to make an informed decision.

Trying to decide also....
by: Debra

My coton is nearly 6 months old and I'm also thinking about whether to neuter him or not.

I'm not concerned about possible weight gain, that can always be carefully monitored, but my concern is whether or not his personality will change afterwards, as I don't want him to lose the fabulously cheeky character he has!!

Neuter
by: Sharon and Jasmine

Jasmine is now 1 year old and has never gone into heat, at least I don't think so. I planned to have her spayed @ 6 months but have been holding back to when she will be a little older. I also have cats that I have always had neutered or spayed before 6 months and never had any problems. I think towards the end of the summer I will have her spayed. I don't want any puppies. She is always with me when she is outside so I am not that worried. And I worry about the operation and afterwards. Got spayed myself some years ago and I did just fine. LOL!

Still in tact
by: Truffles

Truffles was originally purchased by a family member in an impulsive decision. Within days I became Truffles Mom. Years ago I had conkers male and female not fixed and ended up becoming a breeder for one litter until I got the female fixed who did gain a ton of weight. I decided not to fix Truffles because I thought to possibly stud him out as he got older. He is now just over two years old and I haven't done anything yet to stud him out but also feel like it's too late to put him under. Surgery is always a risk. The downside is if I take him to someone else's house I have to watch him like a hawk because he tends to want to P everywhere, he thinks the world is his toilet. He also tries to 10 to hold anything and there's more male dogs in the neighborhood then female so on our leashes walking I don't know if it's an alpha male thing or if the poorboy just needs to get some relief. He is a very stubborn boy & could use some obienence classes, Unless it's just his extra parts making him this way?

Pro neuter
by: Henry's Mommy

Henry was neutered when he was about 7 months, we only put his cone on at night as he never tried to chew his stitches which is crazy cause he chews everything still at 1.

He is 13 pounds and such a clown.

I choose to have it done because the vet said there is a high risk of medical problems in boys who are not, especially cancer and also to deter someone stealing him for breeding.

Yes neuter
by: Marcia

My Beau was neutered at 8 months. He recovered quickly, and he weighs what he should for his size. Beau will be 4 this year, and neutering has not harmed his body or personality.

Neutering
by: Anonymous

My boy is 6 months old. He is going to be neutered very soon. Had preliminary blood tests today. He has had an awkward moment with a friends female puppy. I called my vet immediately and was told he could get her pregnant. That convinced me he needs to be done. I am worried about it but I feel there is just no choice for us. He's 6 months and weighs 13 1/2 lbs. he's gaining rapidly before surgery. Wonder what neutering will do to his body. He is the cutest dog I've ever had and the love of our lives. As u all know these cotons are just so smart.

Your choice
by: Anonymous

We had no plans to breed our pup and since we purchased her with a no breed clause. We had her fixed at 6 months. At 3 yrs old and 13 pounds the vet says she is at optimal weight for her frame. I think the decision should be around breeding rather than weight gain.

Maybe..
by: Margo

We neutered our Beauregarde when he was 6 months old (now 1 year) and we're glad we did. He had a quick recovery and he's every bit as playful & puppisish now as he was before.. If you're not planning to breed, it's the best & kindest thing you can do..

Neutering
by: Lynne

We neutered Chauncey when he was 8 months (he's now 2-1/2 years). Quick recovery (although he didn't love the cone around his head too much ;-). He's never marked anything, & gained maybe a pound or two thereafter, which we attribute to his growth stage at that point. He's been 13 lbs. for well over a year. Our vet recommended the timing...suggest you speak to your vet about it...if he/she suggests the procedure now, it would probably quiet your family's objections.

neutering 8 month old
by: Judy

I have mixed feelings. I had both a male and female and both gained weight after being fixed. They were Shelties. I now have a 12 week old Coton and I don't think I'm going
to for that reason
