My Coton won't roll over

by Truffles Mom

My Coton is just over a year and though I have taught him many tricks but the one he refuses to do is rollover. He has issues with laying on his back on command. I was worried that he had a back issue as I heard about some Cotons having back surgery but I noticed that the little fluffernutter WILL lay on his back exposing the world to his private parts to sleep at times. If I go to approach him he will let me rub his tummy but he will quickly roll to his side. I thought it was a alpha dog issue or trust issue but since he does let me rub his tummy it can't be that he's worried about being vulnerable. Any suggestions? Thanks is advance!

To roll or not to roll… NEW
by: Truffles Mom

Thanks everyone, I truly appreciate all your feedback! I have tried the repetition and the treat by the nose and it doesn't seem to work but that the fact that he gets on his side and shows me "belly" he gets the treat now anyway. Lol. who trained who? The fact that he does or doesn't rollover isn't really a big deal, we love him all the same! :) I was just wondering if there was something different or better I can do or if it was the breed now I know it's just his own individuality which has my heart no matter what!

When laying on his side beside you in bed just keep treat close to nose & he will follow it over to other side to get it. Repetition key.

Your baby is precious and I'm sure very smart. If he doesn't want to roll over, so what? Don't read that much into it. Be happy with what he does do well.

My coton won't roll over
by: Suzan Mesquite NV

I wouldn't worry about your coton not rolling over, my Roxy is 4yrs old she doesn't roll over on her back unless she's sleeping too. I try rolling her over on her back but she doesn't stay. However my other coton named Cotton who is also 4yrs old always rolls over on her back every time someone starts to pet her she rolls over for tummy rubs. I think some cotton's like to roll over on their backs and some don't I don't think anything is wrong with that. Hope this helped.

Back

My little guy is 3 now and while he would sleep on his back in his first year, he does not like being on his back now. It seems to have more to do with his breathing than anything.
