Coton Connection, Issue #042 - Safe Flea and Tick Prevention
April 20, 2014
Welcome Coton Lovers:

Happy Spring

Are you looking for a safe chemical-free way to treat fleas and ticks?

Happy Easter for those of you who celebrate, and Happy Spring! The good news is that warmer weather is finally here (at least for many of us). The bad news is that those nasty fleas & ticks thrive in warmer temperatures.

I know that like me, many of you have been looking for a safe and effective way to treat fleas and ticks. I get so frustrated with all the conflicting information about the safety of some of the prevention treatments.

Ticks aren’t usually a problem where I live, but I’ve been looking for an all natural chemical-free flea prevention solution for Luc for awhile. I’ve been using Advantage for years without any problems (that I know of), but lately I’ve had some concerns that have got me searching for new ways to treat these nasty pests. Of course my Vet is the first person I turned to for answers, but he's pretty firm that the flea topical solutions are safe (Revolution, Advantage, Trifexis).

I love my veterinarian, but I have concerns:

  • I don't see how it can be safe to put pesticides and chemicals on my dog, especially since he’s already so sensitive due to his allergies. (See this article by PETA stating that over 44,000 complaints have already been submitted ranging from skin problems to death).

Peta Facts on Flea and Tick Prevention Safety

  • My cat has recently started licking the area where the flea topical (Advantage) is put on Luc and I'm afraid of her ingesting these chemicals.

  • The smell is awful and the odor lasts for days.

  • I’ve heard that many dogs build up an immunity to these treatments and stop working after awhile. I’ve read that this is especially true with Frontline.

So, now what?

Many of the so called natural flea and tick prevention remedies seem like they don’t consistently work for all dogs – they may work for some dogs, but not all. I find this true with many of the natural allergy relief products I’ve tried with Luc also; it’s a lot of trial and error.

Right now I’m in the experimentation phase. Luc just started using

Only Natural Pet Herbal Defense. As you can see from the list of ingredients below, there are no toxins or chemicals. (ingredients: Almond Oil, Neem Oil, Essential Oils of: Organic Lemongrass, Citronella, Catnip, Lavender, Rosemary, Clary Sage & Cedar).

I can tell you that in addition to the safe ingredients, there is no odor, and my cat isn't attracted to it like she was with Advantage. I haven't seen any fleas or ticks, but that may just be due to where we live. I will let you know how it works (so far it's only been a month).

One of our visitors was kind enough to let us know about this website where you can find the ingredients in many of the commonly used flea & tick prevention products. GreenPaws Flea and Tick Products Directory This is a very informative site; but don't forget that YOU are your dog’s best advocate and some further research may be required. Even Vets aren’t always up to speed on the best organic chemical-free choices.

Good luck and let us know if you've found something safe that really works!
