Woofing and barking

by Deb and Cameron
(Raleigh, NC)

My 3 year old Coton, Cameron, constantly "woofs" and barks. He can be totally relaxed and woofs about every 15 to 20 seconds When he is not woofing, he is barking. I have tried EVERYTHING from verbal correction to correction bark collars to training collars. I swear he hears ants because there is absolutely nothing outside or inside to bark at. I leave nice music on. I have tried leaving the TV on. Nothing works. But when I go on weekends to stay at a friend's house, he is MUCH better and rarely does it. (The lady whose Coton does not bark is so lucky!) I am at the end of my rope! Please help me and Cameron! Thank you!

barking Coton NEW
by: Lulu & Socrates

I think your baby needs a lot of interactive playing time with you.
Socrates only barks and woofs,
1. wants to get onto bed next to me when he wakes up.
2. hears strange sounds or door bells. When he barks for no reason, we pick him up and open the door an ensure that everything is okay too.

He loves to visit my neighbors with me (he is very happy to be around people, just like yours).
Socrates plays a lot though out the day. He fetches ball when he takes care of business outside. Also my husband and I plays with him, chase, tugging, hide and seek, and others inside of house (more than 5 time a day for 10 to 15 min).

Colton can be a mega playing machine and needs to be challenged. If you have time to play with him, pls set a schedule to play with him (until he wants to rest). I think that your baby will be a happy boy to chill out next to you.

Barking Coton! NEW
by: Donna

Thanks Carole! I do think the Coton breed is amazingly smart and quite the communicative breed for sure!!! McKayla, the younger one has the energy and sass to fill a mansion and her barking can turn into a howl if she hears something she knows is just for her.. like a neighbors dog. I am stepping up training especially when walking and it is going to be a time that has to continue to be focused on as she is still young enough to know it is not going to be a ongoing issue for years!!!Now our three year old, Cassidy, did not bark as she did when a pup but will if it is to alert us. Both are trained but totally different personalities and is quite the fun around here!!! Good luck with your training!!

Smart Dogs Learn Bad Habits Quick NEW
by: Carol - Vestal, NY

I don't know if your dog might be barking for attention - but my Coton has learned some verbal ways to get my attention pretty quickly. He woofs, snorts, shakes his head, and also "clicks" his teeth (making a snapping noise) As soon as I look at him he knows he's got me in his gaze and has won the power battle. Like a Mom with a spoiled kid, I will often give him a treat just to appease him. If I can ignore him for a minute or two he usually will stop. He also does it whenever I have a guest over and am not paying attention to him. These smart little dogs certainly know how to get their way! As I write this - he has dragged his food bowl over to the computer and flipped it over 3 times. I think it's time to hit some training websites!

Barking Coton! NEW
by: Anonymous

YES, get it! I have two Coton's ..one who is three years old and the one who barks is a year old. The issue when we go to park, walk or anyone walking by or of course another dog. Have done it all and just so difficult as she is so excited to be out and about and thinks she owns the world. Using a harnass seems to have calmed her down some. Does sit and heel but just barks. It is hard when we go with our RV and first thing she does when she goes outside early she barks. My other Coton does not bark only if necessary. Help is needed here!Has gone through training and do work with her when needed.

Working & Barking NEW
by: Vicky & Jonah

Please throw away the shock collar. Go to YouTube.com/ZakGeorge & watch the videos at least a couple of times & then start working w/your pup. At least the nice thing is in order to learn the quiet command they 1st must know the bark command.

There r no magic answers except training. If u feel u cannot spare the time to familiarize yourself w/training videos & then implement or join & obedience training class & spend the time training hire a trainer but shock collars r not an answer for any dog.
