Why is my 4 month old Coton de Tulear getting UTIs?

by Emma's Mom
(Harrisburg, PA)

For over a month now and two different types of antibiotics my 4 month old female has been diagnosed with a UTI. The Vet says something about crystals showing up.

Latest measure which has me concerned/dismayed is vet says I have to switch her off my dog food (Holistic Select, puppy small breed bites) and put her on their prescription food, Hills Science Healthy Advantage. I'm unhappy about this switch because I've not heard good things about Hill's Science -- have any of you? And I guess I'm confused why vet would think her food could be causing the UTIs.

While trying to switch she developed diarrhea yesterday but not had any bowel movements today (1 pm) - I'm thinking diarrhea may be because despite my efforts to ween her she picked out only the new food and ate it.

Coton Food
by: Terry

Our female Coton is just over a year and we have had no problems with her. From the start I have used Fromm Pet food and have recently switched her to the adult version of the same. Comes in many flavours and she loves it. Our Coton loves vegetables and fruit and this pet food has it. Here is the link: http://www.frommfamily.com/
I hope your Coton is better soon.

experience
by: Kami

i have experience this with my own (male) Coton. I have questions for you. Please email me at theelegantelle @ hotmail . Com and we can talk.

Did the vet say whether her urine was acidic or alkaline? Did the vet say which types of crystals? I can for sure help and give you some great resources. My coton has a history o utis and calcium oxalate crystals and stones and he has been uti, crystal and stone free for a year thanks to the help of special people and a homemade diet.

4 month old w/UTIs
by: Deborah

The only food our breeder recommended is EVO/Innova -- We have two males. Too often, we have found, the vet recommends whatever they sell in their office/clinic. If I had a puppy this young w/such illness I would call the breeder if that is an option for you. Diarrhea is common on any change of food, as you know. I would also consider a second opinion/another vet. Good luck.
