Which coton de tulear should I choose?

by Sarah

I've been talking to a breeder about adopting on her retired Cotons (this would be my first dog) but I've run into a couple of problems.

First of all, the male is 4 years old and is not neutered. He is potty trained but wears a diaper in the breeder's house. However, she predicts that once he comes home with me, he will start marking and since I've never had any dog experience, it will be hard for me to fix this behavior.

Secondly, she also has a 9 month old Coton de Tulear puppy that she was hoping to keep but realized might have a loose patella. But she's a girl and I wanted a girl. What should I do? Would it be easier to get the adult male and then train him or the female puppy even though she might have that lose patella. What should I even do with a lose patella? What are the chances she might need surgery? Will she be lame in one leg?

Should I Choose
by: Vicky from Az

Giving ur heart to a puppy knowing about the patella for a 1st time dog owner I feel is alot to handle.
I agree find a different breeder & spend ur time together w/your dog happy & healthy.
I have had a silky w/legs calve disease(hereditary). He was 6 mo. old when I found out.
I call him my million dollar dog.
It was a lot of work to keep him safe from one wrong slip & I have had dogs all my 58 yrs.
It will be a challenge for ur heart not to break on her bad days. There will be limitations all thru her life.
An older Coton is fine but patella is a hereditary problem.
Good luck. Lets us know what happens.

Patella surgery
by: Elizabeth

My coton is recovering from patella surgery right now! She is sixteen months. You have to surgically fix it but they will not be lame. Believe me! Our Sugarbelle is already jumping on the sofa again although she's not supposed to! Surgery cost us about $1300. You should fix it so they don't get arthritis. Feel free to message me if you have more questions about patella surgery. I've always had dogs; she is my first coton. I love her far more than any other dog I have ever had.
