What should I expect my new Coton De Tulear puppy be like?

by Nora

Will he cry the first night? Will he be shy? Will he want to sleep with me or will he be more standoffish at first? What age should I expect a Coton to be potty trained? Is a belly band be cruel for night time? Is a crate with potty sheets be smart?

The puppy's nose is not black NEW
by: Anonymous

The breeder told me that the nose will turn black eventually. Anyone has a idea? Also from the pictures, the little puppy has tear stains on both eyes.

Congrats on new puppy NEW

Be prepared for the puppy wanting to sleep in your bed all the time. They all develop different ways to tell you they have to go to potty. I tried the bell with Buffy and it didn't work. Then one day she pawed at my leg and ever since then that's how she tells us she has to go. In fact if I'm washing dishes she will stand up and scratch my legs real fast which means mommie hurry I have to go. She lightly taps on my husband if I ask her to wait a few minutes.

First night NEW
by: Gale

I'm so happy to hear your first night went so well. Don't worry if you have some bumpier nights ahead - it's all part of being a puppy. Cotons are smart and learn pretty quick. Send us some photos when you can. Nothing's cuter than a Coton puppy 😀

First night NEW
by: Anonymous

Our puppy came home yesterday and the first night was a success ! When we went to bed we put him in his travel carrier . He wined/howled for 10 minutes. After realizing we were not going to give in he went to sleep . I heard him whimper at 230am so I got up and took him outside to potty. He' was successful with both and when we came in I snuggled him in bed with us . We got up at 6 and he went out and then we crawled back in bed till 1030 or so.

I credit his breeder for providing us with a good , strong , well tempered puppy that was worth every penny ! I honestly can tell you after only 24 hours he is the best puppy ever :)

I cannot tell you how much my entire family and I love him . Enjoy your baby :)

Lulu & Socrates NEW

Many Congrats!!!
First night can be very challenging. You should ask the breeder if the puppy sleeps alone, or sleeps with his brothers and sister. If he was with his brothers and sisters, he will most definitely cry . We ended up let ours sleep with us. When they got older, they stay with us on the bed, but later they sleep inside of their crate.

He will try to figure it out his new home. But he will warm up to you very quick and follow you around.

Mine took a week to potty train. We got one in 14 weeks and the other one in 10 weeks. They did not like the peeped, so we took them out. You can use a bell to train yours.
When we got them, we took them out around 6 am, and every two hours after until 10 pm. Overtime, we took them out, we made sure they rang the bell. After a week, when they wanted to go out, they will ring the bell.

My little one is 9 month old, and he can hold for 12 hours. He goes out 9 pm and can hold until 9 am next morning. He goes out after meals (morning and evening), once or twice more. No peepad insde of crate.

If you train him correctly, he will not need belly band. Patience and Consistency are key to well trained happy puppy. Good Luck
