My Coton's breeder recommended Vellus, which I've since discovered is used by a number of top show people. We've used it for over 3 years - shampoo, conditioner, grooming spray and satin cream - and are very happy with it. I've also heard good things about Isle of Dogs and Les Pooch, but you can blow a fortune trying this and that product.

I've heard nothing but bad things about Chris Christensen shampoo and conditioners, but everyone I know uses their combs and brushes. Check out the Coton de Tulear Facebook group, for lots of info.

Petco Groomers
by: Vicky & Jonah (Az)

As I cut down my words on my rambling I noticed I deleted the main ques. sentence. I have had luck with the Petco here by my house. The one girl there was familiar w/Cotons the one time I had him groomed I used them for the puppy cut.

Their is a section "Coat Problems or Coat Changes" on this website. It was a newsletter on 8/7/12 under the Coton Connection which talked of the shampoo Isle of Dogs. I have not used this product yet but I did see it at Petco or Petsmart cannot remember which one.

I 1st listed below Cowboy Magic shampoo & cond. but I have since chgd my mind. This product seems to attract dirt more then I like on Jonah since his coat is like real cotton.

The Cowboy detangler is great for the puppy coat. The detangler saved me during the puppy coat phase. I no sooner brushed him free of mats & their was another mat so I used it alot in my nightly brush routine & u bathe puppies more often. A dab will do u. A small bottle lasts a long time.

I still put it on before letting him swim since it keeps his coat from matting (wonderful) also works well w/the clorine. I find shampoos made for a silky coat work best for Jonah (41/2yrs). His cost is real cotton soft like.

A place here in AZ u can subscribe to their newsletter is called Ryans Pet Supplies. They r at 1805 E McDowell. They have a flat rate of $5.89 shipping. If u go their since they r a warehouse type write down the product # off of the website & it makes it easier for them to pull ur supplies.

A groomer turned me on to Ryans since this is where alot of them buy all pet supplies. They carry great grooming products for all coat types and an average of 30% below pet store prices. Even cheaper on sale items. They also will answer ur emails if u have a ques.

I have found that unless u just let a groomer cut ur Coton short by the time u comb them out before the bath u might as well just bathe them & wet comb them out immediatly after. I blow dry if needed. They air dry fast. Most groomers I have talked to will not spend the time on combing them out before bath without xtra cost.

I use the bathtub & a sprayer to rinse. Key issue for a Coton coat since if u do not rinse throughly it does not matter what product u use. I prefer a shampoo & conditioner all in one. Then I use a good detangler/cond. to brush or comb out product less grusome for myself & Jonah.

I have also found that the shampoos as with us need to be rotated. Do not hesitate to try another product once that bottle is gone. Also the ones that helped me survive the puppy coat I have now chgd out. So be careful buying a big gallons worth alot of them are to be diluted on the bottles 5 to 1 etc.

I hope this helps in keeping costs down as u find what works for ur Coton coat type. If u visit Petco keep ur eye on their clearance section both on their shelves & designated area they run some awesome prices on grooming tools when they mark products down. Congrats on ur new Coton.

Cowboy Magic Detangler & Shine
by: Vicky & Jonah (Az)

U know I also use Cowboy Magic shampoo & conditioner at times but their Detangler & Shine is a great investment which u rub into their coat basically like VO5 (a dab will do u). Put into coat a dab after bath while wet before comb out & maybe once more that month.

If ur Coton luvs the water it will help with matting & if not it still will help keeps mats under control. I purchased a bottle some 4 yrs ago & still have 1/3 left. It also helps with the fly aways here in AZ in the winter our air is dry just like using a heater in the east.

Chris Christenson products. Contact them and they will help you pick what you need. It is pricy, but worth every penny.
