What distinguishes a Coton de Tulear from other small white dogs?

by Shannon

I have done my research and Coton de Tulear is definitely my breed of choice. However they are very expensive. I have been looking at animal shelters. I truly get confused with any small white long haired dog. How can I tell that its a Coton?

THE COTON LOOK
by: IRis Miller

Look into the eyes, a Coton has a look that says "I LOVE YOU"
I have had several dogs in my lifetime but none as sweet and expressive as my Coton. Maybe you'll think I'm nut, that's okay, but I do believe Tuffy and I communicate telepathically. He is always watching me and staring at me, as if he is reading me, and always knows my next move.
Best of luck, I hope you find a Coton too.

Lots of cute white shaggy dogs
by: Gale

That is a very good question. Many of the small white long haired puppies do look alike. It gets easier to tell them apart as they get older and their features become more pronounced. It also gets tricky with all the mixed breeds out there.

I would suggest taking pictures with you of the Coton (as well as some of the similar white breeds so you can rule them out such as the Bichon, Westie, and Maltese). The Coton can usually be distinguished by the cottony feel of their coat and they also have a larger head with a more predominant nose than other small white dogs. It took my dog months before he grew into his big black nose :)

I do understand your confusion though. Just look at the photos on this site of all the Cotons and you can see that even within the breed there are differences. Different sizes, hair color, and hair cuts can give them unique looks.

Good luck with your search!
