What Are Your Coton's Quirks?

by Vicky & Jonah
(AZ)

Tomorrow is my B-day. July 18,1954. Yes I will be 58 yrs. old. Jonah was my B-day present in 2008. He was born on 12/06/07. As the old cliche goes he saved my life. As with all, the luv we have for our Cotons it is so hard to put into word. So to celebrate the day I am wondering what is the QUIRK that your Coton does? Here is mine.

Now mind u I have tried to break this habit now for 4 yrs. When it starts to go away as most of us do I drop the ball & the quirk comes back. Jonah hates when people leave. Weather it is family or friends as soom as they get up to leave he starts to bark at them & then acts crazy running around. Now he does not bite or follow them outside but will run to the front window & if I do not stand & stare at him he will scratch at the window until they pull away. Now if he is sleeping it is out of sight out of mind.

Other then that is pretty perfect. He is happy & a good boy. The only other thing he does is he luvs to rip up kleenex if he finds one laying around. He does not eat them. Just rips it up. I could not ask for a better best friend. He luvs to go to the dog park, take daily walks, do tricks for treats & luvs his little pool. So I am NOT asking how to fix the quirk. I know that if I did not find it funny I would get serious & nip it in the butt. I am just wondering what other quirks are out their that we as Coton luvers let them have their QUIRKINESS?

Lots of Funny Quirks NEW
by: Anonymous

Quill is 2 years old and our first Coton but our 6th dog. He definitely is unique in some of his behaviors! 1. He loves, loves his crate and I cannot get him to sleep outside of it at night. I want so bad to transition him out of his crate but he will not do it! It is snuggly and safe for him, I guess. 2. When let out of his crate in the morning, he runs out like a shot and finds a toy before running out the door for potty. He then usually leaves the toy outside-lol! 3. He loves to lay on your neck, nestled up in your face when you are watching t.v. Almost blocking you from watching. Makes me laugh every time. 4. He takes chew or bones from our two big dogs by slowly moving closer and closer to them and eventually laying over their paw that they are using to hold the bone. Finally he takes it. The big dog is growling and telling him not to but it must be a game to them! 5. Loves to lay under the bed and on back of couch. 6. Loves to run and catch frisbee even though it is almost bigger than him. 7. Loves, loves his little cat toy ball and will constantly put it under cabinets, ottomans, the fence outside and then try to get it out. He is obsessed with these balls and will play with them from morning to night on some days!! He is incredibly smart and so darn enjoyable! Love this breed so much!!

Cotton Quirks NEW
by: Vicky & Jonah (Az)

Thank u all to all contributions. They have been greatly enjoyed. Every time Jonah does this I wonder if he is the only one. So here goes. When he came into my life I went to rub his belly. He made a growling sound. I said hey no no. Thinking to myself is he growling at me?

Not to make a big deal of it as we would play or wake up in the morn. & I would rub his belly he would make the growling noise. Now he does not growl at anything else. To make a long story short quickly I realized this was a growl of contentment. He will lay forever w/feet up in the air once I start to rub his belly & do his growling talk. Still 5 yrs. later this is the only time I ever hear this funky growling sound. Does anyone else find this w/their Cotons?

Our Imy
by: Anonymous

Has been such a delight since we acquired her at 12 weeks six years ago. She still has tht puppy energy and if we miss a walk she runs through the house from rooms almost in a circle at breakneck speed.

She goes to work with me and will "bow" when someone comes in inviting them to play. She will then take them in to my office and retire to her bed until they leave and she escorts them out to front office and never goes past the door. Before she takes them to my office she comes to me and give me a look that says "someone is here..come, now".

When she goes out at night for her potty break she "summons" her friends with a happy bark and can have 3 or 4 dogs answering. If a friend (dog) is on a walk she goes to the window and whines until we take her to see her friend. When we talk on the phone and she recognizes the voice she bolts to the window just "knowing" that person will appear...and in many cases she is correct.

When someone leaves our house she has to get harnessed up and walk them to the car and sit until they leave.Has anyone seentheir coton give you a half way smug grin with her side teeth exposed. It is usually when she is disgusted that she is made to do something. We quit counting at over 250 phrases she understands and can act on, We talk to her like a person and she ony needs to hear it a few times and she has the mindset to remember.

Oh the coton stories all owners can tell. They are a hoot.

Quirky Coton
by: Elizabeth

Whenever someone comes over or the doorbell just rings, my Abbie has to find a treat, put it in her mouth & and frantically search like she "must" hide this treat immediately. She whines & whines with this treat in her mouth searching for I-have-no-idea-what. It's hysterical.

My dog eats toenails.
by: Sam and Zeus

I don't know whether to call it a quirk or a habit but its a gross one at that. Whenever we clip our nails Zeus is right there to lick them up. It is something he started as a puppy and now it has become one of his favorite things.

Little shredder.
by: Andrea Kennedy

Reading about the quirks and antics of all the adorable Cotons was such fun. These little dogs have an abundance of energy and amazing intelligence. My Karinka is six months old and is such a sweet girl but she has her moments of mischiefness One thing she loves to do is shred Kleenex. Usually not within her ability reach then but one day a cabinet was left open and got ahold of the box and she had such fun! After speaking with her moms owner I learned that her mom loves to do the same thing. She loves to play fetch and is learning to distinguish her toys by name. Amazing.

Angel
by: Linda

Our Coton, Angel's so funny when we give her a treat, she takes it & goes into the kitchen, lays it on the rug, circles around it barking, then lays on her stomach with her head on her paws and growls, all this before she ever eats it. It takes her about 5 minutes to eat her treats.

How do you like them Quirks ?! Happy B-day!
by: Lana

Happy Birthday! Best of Love & Luck to both of you!(sorry for writing late…)
Love your post!My dogs have few quirks as well:
*Gio-boy wakes up with the Sun & is ready to go out for a walk. To wake me up he makes this amazing sound, very soft & almost apologetic – like he is singing - “ma-ma”. When I heard it for the first time I said to myself: “I have a talking dog – Wow!”
*The moment I get off my bed he takes a deep bow almost like a horse lowering his head & bending his front legs…I never saw anything like it before, just like an old movie –…Duke’s stunning Arabian horse is greeting her Ladyship…We never skipped this greeting ceremony once.
*Gio loves music; I think his favorite composer is Vivaldi. When he was a small puppy he learned how to squeeze his favorite plushy squirrel absolutely syn-chronically with the sound of my son’s violin – they practiced head to head every day, Gio - on squirrel; my son - on his violin.
*Gio is very affectionate boy & always acts like a Knight of the Round Table. If Natasha is not happy he would use all his charm to make her feel better. He would sit as close as he can, try to kiss/lick her face & ears until she would give him a smile & kiss him back.
*Belly rub is one the his favorite moments I can tell – he would roll left & right to make sure we did not miss a single spot, always making me smile, sometimes he makes funny moaning sounds : “I like It, I love It & I Want Some More Of It …”
My little Natasha is all about beauty and grace until you hear her voice – a big grizzly bear, so funny!
*She loves to sleep late in the morning to make sure she looks fresh and rested.
*Nata hardly ever barks, her eyes speak louder then words. She absolutely cannot stand movies where people fight or hurt each other, she would ask me to change the channel - one staccato bark & one sharp look - to get my attention.
*My girl detests smelly grooming products almost like saying to me:” No chemical, please.”
* If she does not like to go for a walk when it’s raining or cold she would simply walk away gracefully – no arguments, no negotiations…”No thank you!”
* She taught Gio how to trash a Wee-Wee pad, he never did that before: she made a little tinny-tinny whole in the middle of the pad & walked away. He did the shredding…while she was watching him from a distance, like it was not even her idea. “Don’t blame me, it’s his entire fault.”
* They did it once or twice & stopped after I talk to her saying how bad it is, she never did it again. Amazing! She does not like to be a “bad girl”, because that’s not who she IS.
Happy Birthday!!!

Happy Birthday
by: Anonymous

First as many others have said happy birthday to your little baby. He is adorable. My Della has a habbit of stealing socks on feet or off she just loves them underwear too which is unusual. She also thinks she's part cat and sits on top of the back of the furniture. She also loves to dig into the couch I'm not sure if she's trying to lay down or sharpen her nails either way the sound is annoying. In fact she's trying to steal my sock as I type this. I love my little Dellalicious.

Our Crazy Coton
by: Andi

Our Coton goes CRAZY when there's a doorbell or phone ringing on TV. She doesn't seem to register anything else from the television, but will run around the house barking like mad when she hears the sound on TV.

Another "weird" thing is that she loves band aids. Whether the band aid is somewhere on your body or still in the wrapper in the box, she will try to eat it. Good thing none of us are accident prone :)

LOVE HER!!

VICKY& JONAH Quirks
by: Iris Miller

Happy Birthday Vicky!!
I got a good laugh and a sense of "normalcy" after reading your posting about Jonah going nuts when people leave. Tuffy's birthday is also in Dec.(26) 2007(maybe it is an astrological quirk?) and my four year old Coton does the same thing as your Jonah only when people leave, When people arrive, he is happy and greets everyone, even some strangers..
I think he wants every human in his pack and under his control, nobody leaves Tuffy's sight. If he hears the word GO, he goes nuts, If someone comes to visit I have trained everyone not t say "I have to go"so Tuffy does not get a clue from "go", they just give me a signal, and don't move until I pick him up or put a leash on him. That way he won't go after them or paw the back of their legs(I have to command him "off" and Leave it!"but best of all is to stand still until I get in front of him..I think it is part of his separation anxiety because if I am holding him near me then he is secure that I will not "go"too, These Coton's are highly intelligent and perceptive.. Gotta love em! Oh, Tuffy is a sneak thief. He made up a game called steal the paper roll, he sneaks into the bathroom and steal the t.p. cardboard rolls that are used up then he brings it out to tease me to chase him and try to get it away from him.Sometimes he lets me keep it, but I have to throw it for hi to fetch, then he rips it up.Game over, (until there is another "paper roll"(he knows those words too)
blessings and love Iris and Tuffy.

coton quirks
by: sherry-cotton-candie

First of all we would like to wish you a very HAPPY BIRTHDAY!

I could not agree more that these dogs are such a life saver and a real joy to have around. -- Cotton does a few silly things. whenever i sneeze she runs and climbs on me and gives me neck kisses. Does not matter where she is this always happens. she loves to come to the bathroom with me and one time to get her out i had a plastic water bottle in the trash that i gave her. This was weeks ago, now each am she comes in and looks at the trash. I now keep things for her, treats-toilet and paper towel rolls-plastic cups etc.she is so cute and patient until i hand her something. she trots off with her treasure, usually leaving it lay by her toy chest.

We have a magazine stand and when we leave her alone I put our old magazines or our junk mail in the top rack. She will get in the chair and pull it out, sometimes chewing it - mostly just puts it on the living room floor, along with our couch pillows.

She used to come and bark whenever my cell phone would ring but awhile back I got a new one with a new ringtone, she does not pay any attention to it.

There is probably more of these little antics but this is all I can think of now, she is just worth millions to me.

Thanks again for all your advice on our rescue coton - Candie.

Klepto with a little bit of OCD
by: Gale

Happy Birthday Vicky – hope you have a great day and I really appreciate all the knowledge and love of the breed you've shared with us this past year.

Luc has so many quirks (lovable of course). Here are some of my favorites:

  • In the mornings he won’t walk on my living room rug – he’ll walk all around the edge to walk on the tile around it. BUT that’s only in the mornings; the rest of the day he walks across the rug to get where he’s going. Maybe he has OCD?

  • In the past year he’s started hanging out under the bed. At first it was because he was scared of all the activity in the house after I moved, but now he just likes it. I often find him sleeping there; I think it’s like his crate; just a place he feels safe and secure.

  • If he doesn’t want to do something (get in the car, come inside the house, etc), he’ll lay down on his back with his paws in the air.

  • I’ve talked about his penchant for carrots before. He loves to “steal” carrots out of the refrigerator and prefers these stolen carrots to the ones I just hand over to him.

  • He still loves to sit on top of the couch back instead of on the couch seat. I know he shares this little quirk with many other Cotons, as discussed in other posts on this site.

I love my little kleptomaniac with OCD. I wouldn’t trade one quirk!!

Molly's Quirks
by: Anne Glenmoore

These little dogs have very interesting behavior. Our Molly hides her Mother Hubbard Couch potato treats (low fat) all over the house. I have found them in my shoes, behind furniture, etc. And she goes and looks for them to see if they are still there. So if I am vacuuming - I have to put them back where I found them or put them back in my shoes. Sometimes she will go back and eat them. She's like a squirrel hiding her nuts for winter. She makes us laugh every day.

Coton Quirks
by: Sandy

Pixie is 7 months old and has many quirks. I will share one so as not to take up too much space . . .
We have a cat tunnel that Pixie has laid claim too. She will run in there with her treat so our longer legged dog "Scruffy" cannot get it. Pixie likes to steal items and hide them in her tunnel, sometimes in other spots but usually in her tunnel. She especially likes to steal shoes. She doesn't chew on them but gently carries them to her "den". We know if we are missing something to check the tunnel first.
