Transition from Pee Pad

My breeder trained my puppy with a pee pad so even though we trained him to go outside, we continued to use a pad in the kitchen when we went out. At about 3 months old, he started to chew the pee pad so we took it away and he just peed on the floor so we started crating him if we went out (4 hours max).

Now he is 6 months old and does not have accidents when we are around (which is most of the time). We would like to stop crating him but if we leave him in the kitchen, he still pees (without the pad) and eats the pad if its there. Any suggestions? I know this is our fault for using a pad to begin with but would love to solve this problem since he is so well trained otherwise...

Thanks!

Crating NEW
by: Janice

Our little Cotton likes his crate. I keep a blanket and another rolled up for his pillow. We always crate him when we have to leave the house. All I have to say is "let's go to bed" and he runs to his crate. I always have a little Milk Bone in it for him. This really works well for us.

crating NEW
by: Iris

Tuffy has had three different crates and soft travel crates, and would not stay in them, even if my son got in to show him. He will go in as a safe place only, as long as it;s never closed. The only exception is when he is in hiss carrying case under the seat on a plane. He would get out if I let him, but is okay zipped up as long as my feet are right next to him. Tuffy is a seasoned air traveler,he curls up in a ball in his case and hibernates until we land.
I personally do not feel comfortable about leaving my dog in a locked crate alone at home. He must sense that, as he does pick up a lot of my emotions.
good luck, kisses and licks Mom and Tuffy.

Pee Pad transition NEW
by: Kathy

My Coton, Toby, is now 4 years old and has been completely outdoor trained since he was little...and I've never used a "pee pad". However, I still crate him when I have to leave him alone in the house.

He doesn't see crating as a "punishment"; it's his "safe spot". He even "hides" in his crate when he sees me coming with his grooming tools :-)

I have put him in his crate and left the door open--only to find him still there when I've returned. But he'll 'sleep' in his crate and won't soil it. So, it's never been a problem.
