Stained hair around eyes and mouth

Hi, we need some help! Our coton is 2 1/2 years old while we lived in Las Vegas her hair was perfect but we moved to Puerto Rico a few months ago and her hair is getting stained around her eyes and mouth. We still use the same grooming routine, food, distilled water... What could be staining her hair? What can we do/use to stop it from staining? Thanks!

stain around ears and eyes NEW
by: iris

the stain is cause by the red coloring in food and treats the manufactures add red beet powder to make the color brown or red. Beet juice does stain but it's not permanent. I use a clean cotton pad with warm water for each eye and around Tuffy's mouth to first carefully wet and soften, and wipe away the stain and dried eye gunk that sticks to the hair, I keep the hair cut short near his eyes with round tip baby scissors. I taught him the commands, "eyes closed" and stand still".
It's a bit scary to do and in the past I have pinched the skin, he screamed, and I learned to go slow and not get so close. it's a tough job. I know groomers us a small electric shaver around the dogs eyes.I tried it but it terrified both me and my dog, so I went back to using baby scissors. Be very calm and careful. Most times I wet it with the cotton and scrape away the softened residue with the cotton pad and my finger nail.
Good luck with your dog and happy times in your new home.
blessings and love, Iris and Tuffy

stains NEW
by: Vicky & Jonah

U can use a solution of peroxide to 10 parts water. I put in old contact solution bottle since its easy to avoid to close to eyes & wipe off w/baby wash cloth.

U can thou b keeping it to moist by eyes & instead use a flea comb to keep the gunk cleaned off by combing out every day & keep dry.

Angel eyes I do know ppl use but I understand it shouldn't b long term. Ck w/vet.

Why do u use distilled water instead of spring if u buy ur pups water?

Our Coton, Stormy, has always had stained eyes. One of the Coton sites I visited recommended Angel Eyes and it works fantastic. I get it on Amazon. Good Luck!!

Staining NEW
by: Rona (& Barney)

This past year, we had the same issue with Barney who will be 3 in January. Same diet, no known allergies, etc. Only change was that we had been moving around a bit, as we were displaced from Superstorm Sandy while our home was being rebuilt. When we moved back into our home, that is when we really took notice of the staining. After speaking with the vet and his groomer, we decided to try "Angel Eyes" powder in his food. The staining cleared up within a few months and now we use it only occasionally as indicated. He has never had staining around his eyes, only his mouth and paws. Bottom line (and I am NOT an expert), but it might very well be as a result from excessive salivation or stress from moving, etc. Good luck!
