Need help for separation anxiety

Our dog pees when he knows the family is leaving. Multiple children, so it is difficult to cage him prior to leaving. Any ideas?

Separation Anxiety in Coton de Tulear Dog

by Rita

Our 2 year old Coton de Tulear has pretty bad separation anxiety. We have had him since he was a month old. We love his breed and there's never a dull moment.

The only trouble we have is that he has bad separation anxiety. I work at night, husband works days, and kids are in school so if we leave him alone in the bathroom while we shop etc he leaves a present of poop to let us know that he is mad that he could not come with us.

He is one of the most entertaining dogs we've ever had and there's never a dull moment.

Coton de Tulear Separation Anxiety

by Kelly
(Indiana)

Hello everybody,

I have a 5 month old Coton de Tulear and he's just the joy of my life. I crate trained him from the moment I got him at 8 weeks old. He sleeps in there, and that's where he's been left when I have to leave. Pretty soon, though, I'm going to have to start leaving him for an entire work day (I'm a student right now), and I don't want him staying in his crate for 9 hours. He still likes to chew on things, so for his safety, I don't feel I can leave him loose in my apartment.

I have an exercise pen for him, but he just hates it when I leave him in there. He barks and screams. When we were crate training him, he would bark and we would just leave him in there until he settled down. I'm worried, though, that he might have separation anxiety now, and that just leaving him in the pen even if he barks his little head off will only exacerbate the problem. Any tips? I've tried gradual separation techniques and seem to be getting nowhere... Any advice would be much appreciated!
